We wanted somewhere special to take mother in law for her 92nd birthday.
It was a glorious day and the village looked lovely, we walked in to a really warm greeting from the lovely publican, the menu though not massive is really special with some great choices of truly home cooked food. 
A special desert was served for the birthday girl.
Would we come again ‘certainly’

Birthday treat for an older lady

My wife had booked Sunday Lunch at the Star and garter for today just over a week ago - we had visited it several times before with no issues.  The booking was to celebrate two family birthdays - the four of us are in our mid-60's. My wife received a text only yesterday confirming we were still attending and that the pub was looking forward to seeing us. We arrived at the pub 10 minutes before our table was booked for only to find the whole of the pub occupied by 35-40 young people making the most unbelievable noise. There was no room to eat in the pub itself and we were offered a table outside under a gazebo. The door to the courtyard was open so even outside it was very loud. We had not booked an outside table at all - who would in October? The noise from the pub was very obvious even when approaching the venue  - god help the local neighbours in what is normally a peaceful and quiet Sussex Village.

I ordered drinks and was asked if I wanted my beer in a straight glass or a jug - I said a straight glass and the barman then started to pour it into a jug. We should have known it was going to be a shambles even then. While I was ordering drinks, the other three in our party were offered BLANKETS by one of the staff - who has Sunday lunch in a BLANKET for goodness sake? Having settled at a table with our drinks we were then told by the "manager" that because of the "wedding party" of 35-40 food would be delayed by up to an hour. It just got worse. We decided to stay and were issued with menus but were ignored for over 20 minutes with nobody even attempting to take an order. Since food would then be "up to an hour" the whole situation became farcical. Half-cut members of the "wedding party" then started filtering into the outside area where we were seated and started smoking (all of our party were non-smokers) and the noise increased as these people seemed to be taking over the whole pub. Disgusted by the way were treated and the whole experience we left after I had politely - but candidly - fed back the unacceptable service and client experience we had received.

Frankly the manager of the pub should have had the common-sense to shut the whole pub for what clearly was a pre-booked function rather than accepting bookings and shunting people elsewhere. The noise in the main restaurant/bar area was unbelievably loud for what is normally a quiet pub. The pub checked our booking the day before and could have informed us that a function had been booked and only outside tables were available - in that instance we could have understood and booked elsewhere. As a result we left the pub at 1.30pm having to find somewhere else at short notice. Luckily we did - great food and much better value - try the Spur Pub in nearby Slindon - a better roast than our last experience at the Star and Garter, better service and over £5.00 cheaper per head. 

The "manager" of this pub should hang their head in shame at delivering such a shocking customer experience - we will never return again. Whoever employs the manger in question I would suggest a replacement at the earliest opportunity.

As you can see from my profile I am a well-travelled member of the Trip Adviser community so hopefully others will take heed of this review. Book a quiet Sunday lunch here at your peril.


Shocking experience - avoid at all costs

The flies were the worst thing - buzzing around us throughout the meal, settling on the food, on us and generally destroying the ambience. Then there were the figs on the weirdly over-priced cheese board - several of them were simply mouldy. Add in the small size of the fish portions and the ill-conceived duck dish and altogether I'm afraid this was not a pub to which we shall be returning

Disappointing

What a lovely, welcoming place! From the moment you walk in, The Star and Garter oozes friendliness. Front of house was the charming Harry, who showed me to the room and booked a table for dinner. Lovely, clean, gorgeous and comfortable room with views out over East Dean. That evening’s dinner was relatively quiet, but all guests were looked after and somewhat entertained by Harry who was made for that role. The new autumn menu was excellent and hearty, and the wide, yet quirky selection of drinks was top rate. I can’t fault any aspect of my stay, other than I would have liked to have stayed longer. 

Well worth the money, you won’t be disappointed 🙂

An absolute must if you’re in the area!

Stayed with a group of friends for a long weekend.
Between us we took all three rooms and then Jim the landlord arranged additional rooms at short notice for our group with his friends in the village
From friendly greeting to final departure Hosts Jim and Julie could not have been more friendly, caring and attentive
Going out of their way to accommodate our groups varying needs with unfailing good humour
Odd diets, horribly  early starts when Jim catered for our breakfast requirements and keeping the kitchen open in the evening when we were delayed
Lovely staff made us all feel like the Star and Garter was our home from home
The food is  top quality pub fare with an intelligent twist and served by Harry with great humour
Shout out to chef with his showcasing of local ingredients.
Lovely pic nic boxes supplied for our day out on Sunday, so well done and generously provisioned with fresh cakes scones sandwiches pies sausage rolls, all you could want really.

Simple , comfortable clean rooms and all furnished with fans for what was a brutally hot weekend, thanks for that!

Home from Home

Imagine everything you want from a short stay….. well this has it all. Where do I start?? Firstly when you stay away you want a clean room, it is exceptionally clean. You want a long hot bath after a long day walking, the bath is massive aswell as the room. You want tea and coffee in your room, you get a high end coffee machine as well as a fridge with real tea and real milk. You want water in your room, only the best hildon spring and sparking. You want a plug near a big mirror you have it! Honestly you couldn’t ask for more. The best breakfast I can honestly say I’ve ever had. Now the people, you couldn’t ask for more pleasant, welcoming owner and staff. We celebrated new year with a fantastic community after travelling all the way from Essex. Thank you for making our new year start an amazing one.

Would highly recommend the Star and Garter to anyone that wants a friendly welcome to an establishment that is set in beautiful countryside and which offers amazing food. Jim the Landlord is a first class person who did everything possible to ensure I enjoyed a short but important stay when I was visiting my youngest son.  Harry running the bar/restaurant was equally friendly and helpful and helped us to select food that was just sublime.

Try this place you won’t be disappointed,

Absolutely perfect. Lovely room with large comfy bed. Host and staff were very friendly and helpful. Well kept beer and fantastic food. Will hopefully visit again, and would certainly recommend. What's not to like?

Perfect 

Came across the Star & Garter whilst on a walk to Chichester and very pleased that I did, as was needing to fuel up. Lovely location, warm welcome, great service and I can heartedly recommend it for its full English breakfast which really hit the spot, especially the sausages and the Oxford Sauce. Shame I was too early to sample the ales.

A great stop for breakfast

We visited during goodwood revival weekend. Busy, friendly pub with good decor inside. Good food and good selection of drinks. The staff were very courteous and efficient even with a full dining room. Jim and Julie (landlord/ landlady) were excellent hosts who couldnt do enough for us.
Will definitely visit again when we are back in the area.
