My friend and I stayed here during our visit to Highclere Castle. THE ROOM: The room was great. Beautifully decorated and very cozy. The bed was comfortable, and the bathroom was nice. Our room was on the ground floor, and we didn’t hear any noise from other rooms. The downside was that the room was very warm even though we didn’t have the radiator on. We opened the windows while we were in the room, but it didn’t cool down that much. 
THE PUB: The pub was nicely decorated, and the food was good. Breakfast was already set up when we came in very early in the morning with a continental selection and we were also able to order off a menu for hot items. In the evenings the pub was cozy, but the music was way too loud. It was at the level it would be if the pub was packed, but there were less than 10 patrons. 
All in all a great stay, and the location was perfect for our visit to Highclere Castle. 

Great Stay with minor downsides

Got their around 9.30pm,friendly staff although probably the most money I’ve ever paid for a bottle of cider and a rose wine with a spot of lemonade £16.85 I can still remember him saying it!!!!!!,comfy room and bed,breakfast was ok with limited choices.
The place could do with a proper deep clean,full of cobwebs over the cushions at breakfast and clearly the floor hadn’t been cleaned since the day before at least,I’m not one for writing or even commenting on reviews usually,but when I’ve paid £110 for a night I expect more to be honest,and I still can’t get over the price of that drink.

Underwhelmed 

A gem of an inn, we stayed for 2 nights sun to tues the room was fully equipped for your every need, the staff made us feel very welcome and the breakfasts and dinner were excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed spending time there. Only one minor negative was because it was a Mon they were out of some breakfast items such as mushrooms and black pudding. We will definitely be going back. 

Excellent stay

A lovely building in the middle of the countryside. Curt age to be exact. 
The beer was excellent however both nights most items were missing from the menu, and apparently had been for a while. So food was limited. 
My room was downstairs, every movement from the couple upstairs resonated in this room below. A bit awkward to listen to. 
Shower was good, that’s important. Breakfast was ok.

Sadly an underwhelming stay

Second stay at The Bunk and cannot fault it. Nothing better on a cold January dry night to enjoy the hospitality and excellent food. Rooms are extremely well done with fantastic country views. It’s nice and simple but that’s what you want at a pub you instantly want to be your local. Food was excellent - great fish and chips and veggie burger. Great cocktails and beer selection. Staff incredibly friendly from check in to check out. Yeah there is always something you could find slight issue with but for value for money, quality, food, and hospitality The Bunk is absolutely spot on.

Perfect country pub and fabulous food

Thank you so much to The Bunk for hosting a brilliant night for 70 people for my birthday. Diddie and Alex produced the most amazing food and nothing was too much trouble. They also were there the next morning to provide a delicious breakfast for all the guests that stayed plus a few more. The bar ran very smoothly and the staff were so welcoming to my guests and added to the fun. I would absolutely recommend this beautiful pub for a variety of functions.

Great night at The Bunk

I have already reviewed the two staff, yes, two, one chef and one front of house, for at least 12 tables (11 I could see in the bar and 1 in the restaurant, possibly more) they were fantastic, great food and welcoming whilst booking in hotel guests too  (5 stars)
This review is for the owners, directors, shareholders or whatever you call yourselves.
I run a small business myself and appreciate the difficulties that there are with recruitment, reliability, predicting demand, affordability that we all face, but tonight was an absolute disgrace when considering the impact and stress levied on your two, yes two staff. One chef and one front of house. If everyone of you was helping out somewhere else then fair enough, but if any one of you were sitting at home whilst allowing your staff to endure such stress then shame on you. I have seen you, meeting in the bar, laptops open, talking the talk, looking at the numbers, all the stuff that we need to do when running a business, but please don’t treat your staff in such an appalling way .

Great staff, appalling management

Great find! Thankfully my dad knew about it as most pubs are shut on a Tuesday round here. Delicious wine and food, and my youngest was more than happy with the kid’s menu. Great atmosphere, lovely old pub and very cozy. We had the soup of the day (tomato and roasted red pepper), cheeseburger, vegetarian aubergine dish, and ice cream and chocolate brownie. They all went down a treat - great wine too. We will definitely be back!

Excellent local gem!

My family booked Christmas dinner at the Bunk,pre ordered the 3 courses we were going to have for £89.95 per head. Should have had Buck’s Fizz on arrival we didn’t get offered any, we were sat down for 3 hours and still had no dessert! Food and service was a shambles!
Avoid this place it was awful.

Christmas lunch 2022

We used to live in Newbury and regularly eat at the bunk.

We only visited in July-21 and had two rooms that night as well.

Wow it’s gone down hill rapidly.  We booked a night stay.    This time Dec-22, Room 3, we were running later than expected, so travelling up we tried to call several times over an hour and a half, the phone was never answered, voicemail never picked up, call not returned.  No response to email either.

Welcome was non-existent, guy looked at us like we were slightly alien, rather than a warm welcome, after a long drive.

Room is shabby.   The sound proofing between room 3&4 is horrendously inadequate, we could hear the guy in room 4 (sorry to be impolite) farting it is that easy to hear next door. His tv was on for ages and so we could hear every word.   The door from the staircase bangs, as no one has put a stopper to prevent it hitting the wall, when it is opened.  

The morning after a pretty shocking nights sleep wasn’t much better.  Bathroom is tired, shower had has been dropped and therefore is completely battered, why not just replace it? It’s a cheap item that is easy to fix.   There is mould and mildew round the window.  The drainage for the shower is terrible, instead of fixing it, an extra piece of plastic has been fitted to stop water overflowing on to the floor.   It’s awful by the time I had a shower, the tray is completely full, coming up over my feet.  I would imagine the drain is just clogged, and needs cleaning or a better drain needs to be put in.

We went in the bar on arrival and as we left, both times there are boxes left out, I assume from Christmas decs, it was the 17th Dec all decs are up in the pub…….why are the boxes just left out?  It looks a right mess, not to mention a hazard for people.

For somewhere that used to be a brilliant pub and a great nights stay……..this is awful, the Crab and Boar is far better, Travelodge and Premier Inn would also be cleaner, tidier and you’ll get a better nights rest. 

Seeing the reviews of late, I wish I had, had a read of them prior to booking, a massive shame as this used to be an excellent pub hotel……..its not boutique, it’s a bad B&B these days.
