We were having peaceful evening away, doing a bit of stargazing and having a quiet night away as a couple. We picked the hotel based on the website, it’s lovely grounds and situation by the river.  Sadly, the reality was far from the glossy marketing photography. 
The interior is pretty grim. We were put in a room at the furthest end of the hotel, a 1970s annex, next to a leaking stair case the leisure centre.  The room stunk of stale tobacco. It was rank and I was worried about my clothes taking on the foul odour. The room was in desperate need of decoration, the paint was peeling and the walls marked and scuffed throughout.  This was echoed in all of the communal corridors. Only the main centre of the hotel looked somewhat fresher, but even then, the toilets were grubby.
We won’t be staying again. We could have paid less for a Premier Inn and have been assured of a clean and well decorated room. I feel cheated as it ruined our weekend.

Following the  comment by Warwick , I was part of the same group I would add that the food was acceptable  but served on freezing cold crockery ( Soup , Main,Hot desert ) I have never had such cold plates in 35 years of of professional travelling of at least 100 bed nights per year . Also no bread rolls at breakfast a very poor quality thin cut bread only suitable for toast - just.

Disappointing. Attention to detail is lacking. Some reception staff need training in customer service. 
No hot water for half our 3 day break,  still awaiting apology!
Decorating in public areas is tired.
Breakfast totally self service which would be a challenge with traditional bus party of residents and lacked choice. Film of dust on coffee machine.
Large comfortable room. But back of TV not dusted and visible when returning from en- suite.
So much unfulfilled potential.

The hotel is well situated, the staff ok but few in number and hassled in approach. The heating was unable to provide both hot water and heating, most rooms having one or other. Food not bad for our large group. A very competitive rate but the hotel is a pale and sad echo of its former grandeur and the website selective in its phrasing and photography.

Tired and Sad

Just back from a 4 day break, the George is a old hotel but very comfy, the food was very Good (moi veggie).. Special praise  for the staff the receptionist  "Tegan" waitress  "Abby " and  the "Barman" excellent Guy,plus the rest of the guys. Sadly there was a slight problem with the hot water, this was rectified  with a free bottle of wine from the manager



Great Place for a Break

The hotel itself is in beautiful grounds, however needs tidying up to appreciate the beauty it can achieve.  The hotel is in need of an update as it’s looking a little tired and old inside. The rooms are very spacious could probably do more with the space especially in the bathroom. Staff  that are there are friendly although very understaffed and it tells in the food you receive. Need experienced staff in the kitchen as the cooking of certain foods ie pizzas were very sloppy, so much so we couldn’t eat as the toppings just fell off into a mush of a mess, the garlic bread was hard and no flavour. Breakfast agin was very limited but the tea and coffee is good. As for drinks at the bar, very limited and no alcohol free apart from 1 j2o that I managed to get as there was nothing else and they said they had nothing else even though the bar area is equipped to stock various quantities of drinks. Toiletries in the bathroom consisted of 2 small bottles of shampoo and a soap dispenser near the sink and nothing else. Bed linen and towels very nice and clean.  Tea and coffee making facilities in the room and a tv. All in all it’s a pleasant place and if  updated, had better kitchen staff and tidied the grounds I’m sure it would excel. It is dog friendly too for those that like to take their fur baby with them, like us.  
Would we stay again?  yes however we would find elsewhere to eat and not pay for breakfast unless it had improved.

 This hotel is in an amazing location overlooking the river.  Beautiful garden. Ideal location for Hadrian's Wall Path walkers. 
 Unfortunately, when we arrived the woman at reception was quite dismissive and disinterested. The overall feel of the hotel interior was tired and worn. It definitely needs some basic up keep. I understand that it is very old, but still it needs some work.
 Our room was clean with a beautiful view of the river and the gardens. Our bathroom was small but clean. It was adequate.
 Breakfast was a disaster. There was only one person working. The one and only server greeted us and grabbed our utensils from a haphazard pile on a table by the door where we walked in. We were brought to a dirty table where our once clean utensils were placed. The lone server ran off to get a rag and some spray to clean our dirty table that had our utensils in the middle of it. He was obviously overwhelmed but trying extremely hard to meet everyone's needs. He was very apologetic for the many shortcomings. 
 The buffet had an overall sad appearance. The scrambled eggs had a strange white color to them while sitting in pool of water. Sausage undercooked. Tomatoes looked as if a can of stewed tomatoes was opened and dumped into a large chafing dish.  Bacon was ok. The bread was tasteless, gummy white that you toasted yourself with a toaster that went from barely warm to charcoal. The hash browns were Styrofoam triangles. They ran out of coffee and butter just 30 minutes into breakfast service. They ran out of cups and plates. We were informed that they were still in the dishwasher, which was currently running. 
 So, if you have a choice skip the included breakfast and go to the café across the street. 

So much potential here

We stayed here for one night in June whilst walking Hadrian’s Wall.

Our room was huge, incredibly clean and had everything we needed. We were particularly grateful to have multiple windows and a fan as we stayed during the recent heatwave.

We found the staff to be very helpful and pleasant and the outside space and gardens were really beautiful (overlooking the North Tyne).

A lot of people have commented on how run down the hotel is. This is true, it needs a revamp and repaint and definitely needs to replace the floorboards — these creaked very loudly when anyone moved about and this was quite disruptive at night and early in the morning. However this didn’t detract from the functionality of the room. We didn’t need anything fancy, just a bed for the night.

Based on advice online and in our guidebook, we didn’t have dinner here but went up the road to the Crown Inn which was great.

Breakfast was very good , but the dance music being played in the breakfast room was slightly strange. The clientele were mostly quite elderly (at 30 we were certainly in the minority) so it seemed out of place, almost like they wanted to rush people/ discourage them from eating too much or staying too long.

After a revamp, and investment, this could be a really luxurious retreat for all ages.

If staying here ask for room 317 amazing size room large comfy bed usual facilities settee.
Bathroom fantastic water pressure and loads of nearly instant hot water.
Only down side was the short shower screen which had the base gunged up where it joined the bath . It seemed a bit if a hash up and when standing under the shower the water cascaded down onto the floor. This will cause problems in the future. Also the wasg basin had a fine cracked. 
Fantastic external sitting out area facing the river. It was a fantastic warm night so it was really pleasant having a relaxing drink.
The dining room was not busy but we managed to get a table after a bit of persuasion as we wanted a light meal which we were suppose to eat in the next room. Under protest they allowed us to eat in the almost empty dining room.
I had a tasteless pizza but it filled a hole. The service was good and courteous. 

Outstanding location and good value for the money

Absolutely disgusting rooms, spider webs in every corner, and s big spider under bed cover, dirty coffee cups, no soap in dispenser in shower, dust everywhere. No toilet roll in room toilet.
£150 a night,……never again, probably the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in.
Nice garden’s though.
