Great friendly staff especially Carter who created a lovely atmosphere at meal times. Food was very nice with lots to choose from and a great selection of whisky at the bar! Very clean and inviting with spectacular loch views. Had some hot water issues on a couple of morning but other than that would highly recommend staying here!

Fantastic winter getaway

Lovely welcome with the nicest  friendliest staff.  Nothing was a bother.  Made my husband and I and Louie the dog more than welcome!  Good selection of drinks and food.  Breakfast on Dundsy morning just there was laid out fantastic.  Views amazing too.  Perfect place fir a chilled relaxing break.  Back soon hopefully x

Having watched the 15 day forecast from home in Lincoln we spotted some promising weather, second week in January, and booked our four night stay. This turned out to be Scotland at its finest. Spectacular blue skies throughout with snow on the mountain peaks for the full effect. The time in residence was very relaxed. Aided by the fact there where very few guests - two other couples across the four days. The management had opted to keep the flats open (ten of them run in a row loch side next to the main hotel building) and a small crew of live in staff looked after our needs. The main hotel, for which I had originally booked, was not open. When I rang to confirm my booking there was an attempt to charge an upgrade fee for transfer to the flats. This was dropped when I pointed out the need for an upgrade was dictated by their decision to close the main facility 
It was a friendly kicked back atmosphere. If we'd been there another four days I think we'd have been 'mucking in' with the jobs about the place and have ended up going native! The hotel is on the undeveloped side of the Loch and the final approach, once you leave the A819, is down a up and down single track. Some gritting is evidently undertaken by the locals, but I'd say its to be avoided in bad weather. - The road does continue past the hotel for several miles down the Loch side on a flatter route for possible exit options!
All in all it was a very good 'off piste' experience. We'd certainly go again -  assuming we got similar value for money. Damian could do with lessons on how to lite a fire in the bar room grate 🤣

I’ve been to Portsonachan many times. Sometimes with family, other times with friends and as a couple. 

Despite the frequency of my visits, i feel as if I still haven’t travelled enough to this beautiful hotel. If based in the UK, you can drive here (my preference, however there is public transport at the loch town of Inveraray nearby) and the location itself has some of the best skies of stars i’ve seen anywhere in the country and especially Scotland. 

Featuring beautiful scenery on the scenic and historical Loch Awe, amazing food both delivered and dined, comfy beds and well maintained facilities, the owners have clearly put guests first and ensure you remebered your stay fondly. Additionally, the incredibly kind and attentive staff were really knowledgeable about both the area and the venue, which really added to the experience of the stay. 

Every time I stay at Portsonachan Hotel & Lodges, I feel extremely welcome from get go, and always crave my next return to this part of the world.

Beautiful and Welcoming

We had a WONDERFUL time here! What a lovely old hotel. Their full breakfast was delicious, their pizza symptoms, and meals in their restaurant top notch. Showers had awesome pressure, and we paid for a loch view room - well worth it!! Staff we so nice, and I had the best margarita ever in their bar. But that view, that loch... ohhhhh!! We cannot wait to go back. It was an amazing holiday!!!

A magical place to Get Away

We love this place and this was our 6th visit and this time introduced friends to it and they loved it too and will most definitely return. Its always a rekaxing peaceful place to come at anytime but more so on this particular trip as we sadly had my father in laws funeral the day before so this was the ideal place to come and gather our thoughts.Will return very soon

Getaway from it all

The hotel and cottages are located off the beaten track, single track road can be difficult to navigate in the dark but worth it for the peace, quiet and uninterrupted views over the Loch! 
The on-site bar was cozy and staff very welcoming and friendly. We had a take away on the first night as we had driven a long way and felt like cozying up for the night. The pizza and chips made on-site were lovely! We never visited the restaurant on site because we had spent a day in Oban and then the next in Inveraray both within a 30-45 minute drive from Portsonochan. 
We had the Rassay Cottage for 3 nights - bed was comfortable, cottage well equipped and plenty of space! Shower had great pressure! Such a luxury to have a small patio overlooking the Loch and big windows upstairs so you could appreciate the view from the bed or the bath as well. 
Some minor details that would have improved our impression/experience - the outside spaces could do with some TLC a lick of paint here, power washing there. Although we were visiting off season so perhaps works that are generally undertaken later in the year. Decor in cottage was fine although slightly dated. On arrival there were a couple of items of cutlery remaining in the dishwasher and some bits (paper from sugar packets I think) in the kitchen sink drain which should have been caught by housekeeping but over all appeared clean enough, nothing overly alarming. 
The breakfast was okay, would have preferred more options on the menu or a buffet hot breakfast and some fresh fruit with the continental would have been great. 
Would definitely go back in better weather to explore the area around the Loch more.

Beautiful scenery

We stopped here for coffee last Saturday. The young man who served us was taking down Valentine decorations and he gave the impression that he couldn't be bothered. He told us to sit anywhere and we chose a table in the lovely big conservatory.  The coffee arrived on a dirty, plastic tray that would not have looked out of place in a fast food eatery. All the sugars were in different sachets and were 'dog eared'. The young man then asked us to move while he took down the decorations on the window by our table - surely he could have waited until we left! 
This hotel is in a wonderful location  but just lacks finesse.

No finesse!

Disappointed with cleanliness in corridors. looked as though it had not been hoovered after the workmen had been in, shower base kept overflowing, so we could not get showered, not usually like this. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Portsonachan hotel

Just my husband and myself.  We loved the antiques and the 4 poster bed - such fun.  Food was fantastic and all who are employed by the hotel are a delight to chat with.  We would go again if we are ever back in the area.  Be careful on the road in, someone came flying over a hill/curve and thankfully we were not going as fast as they and they stopped inches from a head on.  Would still happily venture there again.
