I booked Hurst Hill 15 April 2023.  Family wedding  three days of celebration over 25/26 August 2023 bank holiday.      Paid in full 17 August.  Travelling down on 25 August  a call from Guy Charlesworth, proprietor  at 1.21pm  whilst I was driving.  Room cancellation for that night and the following.  Guy was in Italy, his Son was I London and no staff at Hurst Hill.  Guy Charlesworth said he would contact booking.com for me to cancel booking.  He didnt bother.   I don't believe he had any intention of honouring reservation   I arrived in West Sussex at nearly 3pm.  No alternative accomodation for that night on booking.com or like sites.  I booked an alternative at a cost of £400.   So as not cancelled on the day  I am £400 out of pocket.   Judging  by other reviews, this us a common occurrence.   Not acceptable at all . Very stressful, distressing and expensive.  I have contacted Guy a few times, only to be ignored . Poor service 😢   I only gave one star as I could submit without one.  No points relevant.

Cancellation on afternoon of stay !!!

Wonderfully secluded 500 year old house with original features - low oak beams and wonky floors - it was just lovely and the beds were really comfortable. Our hosts were really welcoming and made us feel right at home. Even the dog was friendly. Guy is a fabulous cook and provided us with exceptionally tasty breakfasts and evening meal. We would definitely book again. 

Idyllic country getaway

One of the nicest places we have stayed at. Beautiful building and grounds. Great hosts, Guy and Freddie, made us feel more than welcome, felt like part of the family with the large G&T's! In the coldest of weather (-6 degrees) it was toastie inside!  Comfortable beds, just a relaxed atmosphere with all including Winston, their beautiful labrador. Will definitely stay again next time we are in the area. Great local pub nearby with excellent food, beer and landlords. Who could ask for more.

What A Gem !!

A ramshackle building in the middle of nowhere with extremely different rooms and a loud dog. Ours room had no door lock, a TV smaller than my phone and was not en-suite as expected . Very small with the bed against the fireplace making it hard to get in and out. The owner offers cooked food but at a price, otherwise its cearal and his homemade bread included. All in all, never again. 

Out in the sticks 

We had booked this B and B months ago for a wedding and we were very much looking forward to staying. An hour before we were due to set off we received an email to say that our stay was cancelled and that we would have to cancel the booking ourselves. To cancel the day a guest is due to arrive is unacceptable and meant we lost hundreds of pounds in train tickets and weren’t able to attend the wedding. No phone call, just hiding behind an email. I will not be returning.

Cancelled an hour before we set off

I could not recommend this place enough! The B&B is in a beautiful, serene and quiet area. It is perfect if you want to go for a relaxing break. Guy is a wonderful host! He was very kind, understanding and accommodating. He made sure that there were Halal breakfast and dinner options for me and my twin which was amazing.  The double room we stayed in was lovely. We had a great view, our own toilet and bathroom, and it was extremely affordable. We cannot thank Guy and his son enough for their hospitality and kindness. We will definitely be coming back soon!

A wonderful place to stay!

Zero rating as we didn't get to stay there. They cancelled our booking at the very last minute apparently due to a burst pipe in the room. We received no phone call of apology or any notification at all from the b&b and had already traveled and arrived in the village. Guy, this is shambolic customer service. When we did make contact with him after having many calls ignored he suggested a mates place who then wanted to charge us higher than his advertised rates. Don't go there, people, it could happen to you.

Been working in the area for 3 weeks so where I've had a 3-week continuous stay I would have to say it is a must the host and the food is excellent and he couldn't do enough for you and i would go out my way to stay again

I must stay

My trip to Hurst Hill was interesting to say the least. I booked a Double Room with a private bathroom (according to the website) On arrival at the B&B we were early for clock in and it didn’t seem to be an issue at the time as the owner said he could get our room ready in half an hour, we told him not to rush as we had some things to do beforehand. We came back to the B&B almost 3hrs later to find the room was ready to his standard. 

When walking into the B&B we were told we may need to “mind our heads” and that’s not uncommon however being 5’3 I don’t usually have to duck, we basically had to crawl up part of the stairs to avoid being knocked out by an extremely low beam.

Then the man takes us to our room where we discover a small double bed that my feet hung off of and a cupboard which I assumed was the private bathroom. As the owner walked away from the room he pointed to a door in the corridor and said “that’s the bathroom” meaning I would be sharing with other people which is not what I paid for. My Boyfriend then spoke to the owner about the scenario and he dissmissed the situation insisting that we had made a mistake and told us we were wrong, this was the start of the pettiness we received from him.

We also noticed there was no lock on our bedroom door so we had no way of securing our belongs or ourselves over night.

We then asked the Man about dinner options at his B&B and he told us it was a chilli, after explaining to him that we were vegetarian and asking if he had an option for us he said we could have the rice from the chilli and some salad, I did not think this was acceptable as there are no close places to eat and no taxi services in that area meaning we had no choice but to drive to a restaurant as it was the closest place with a vegetarian option.

Later on that evening after returning from Dinner we walked into the B&B and just felt out of place and uncomfortable because of the previous chat we had with the owner, so we went upstairs and sat in the room after about 5 minutes we decided we couldn’t stay there because there was 8 other people in that building and we had no lock on our door so could not secure ourselves or our belongings, after a call with Booking.com we received a knock at the door and we were told to get out, the owner said we would receive a refund from him (which he quickly retracted) and then he persisted on saying how we “were not welcome” and how it was “unacceptable” simply because we did not feel safe so made a complaint. 

The owner of this B&B seemed okay to start with however things escalated from the second we spoke to him that afternoon, he does not take criticism well at all, instead of solving the issue he kicked us out at 9pm, meaning we had to drive 2hrs home that night

In Conclusion I paid £50+ on a room with no security and no Private bathroom, needless to say I will not be returning to this place and hope nobody else gets ridiculed by this petty man.

Worst Stay

Recently stayed and Guy is a charming host - lovely cooked breakfast with home made bread. Dinner homemade on certain nights obviously at an extra cost.Clean room and quiet. Dog friendly. Nothing too much trouble and made to feel very welcome. Ask for Room 4 , on ground floor, shower room & poss use of kitchen/ diner. There is a bed and bath above so could be used as self contained unit. Within 30 minutes of Cranleigh and Petworth. About an hour drive to the coast. Will definitely be visiting again. 

Will definitely be returning.
