I stayed at Ollivers Farm for one night on Saturday, 28 May 2022. I booked based on Tripadvisor.co.uk member ratings and favourable reviews.

Ollivers Farm is a delightful medieval farmhouse idyllically set amid fields at Toppesfield, near Halstead. I stayed there to attend the inauguration of Bhakti Marga’s Srinivasa Hindu Temple at Halstead. 

I would recommend several nights' stay at Ollivers Farm if you would like the quintessentially English farmhouse in a tranquil setting.

The Room

I stayed in an exquisitely presented double room with an adjoining bathroom, which echoed the rustic charm of the main farmhouse areas,

The Common Areas

The farmhouse is the personification of a traditional countryside home. Each room was homely and adorned with furniture and artefacts, creating an atmosphere imbued with unique charm.  The garden was everything you would expect from a classic English garden.

The Staff

Susan, the farmhouse’s owner, was a paragon of hospitality and did everything to make me feel at home. I arrived exceptionally late on the night of my stay, and she patiently waited to ensure I could access the farmhouse and settle into my bedroom.

Dining

Susan kindly accommodated my vegetarian diet, and the selection of food at breakfast was superb. 

The Location

Ollivers Farm is quite remote and much easier to reach if you drive. However, taxis are not as available as in Braintree, especially at night and need to be booked well in advance.


Delightful, rustic charm in the English countryside

Once round it looked rather special,  however the room and bathroom didn't live up to expectations.
The bedroom was small but needed a deep clean! Luckily the spider was dead!! 
The seperate bathroom was large but also needed a good clean, the shower I guess had not been cleaned for a long time, in fact I decided not to use it !
Breakfast was enjoyable particularly the home made jam, oh and l had cash  to pay the bill a small point that I didn't know until I saw the little sign on the dresser?!
P.S. That glass isn't frosted!!!

Dissapointing! 

We recently visited here as we were attending a wedding only 5 mins away from the hotel. 

I had previously called for an early check which they lady did say was ok as she didn’t have any guests staying the night before 

When we arrive no one was in we had to wait 10-15 mins before she arrived back

We were shown our room which I can only describe as a step back to the 50s. 

There were tea and coffee facilities but no milk! 

The heater didn’t work properly but we could only turn that on once the kettle had finished 

We then went to have our showers the bathroom we were using had cobwebs from the ceiling and hairs in the sink.  I then had to proceed in the shower with freezing water

We found a old moisturiser cream in the room which actually went out of date in 1995! (Not that we would want to use it but still shouldn’t have been in the room) 

By our own mistake as we were rushing to get to the wedding we forgot to put out our breakfast slip but we did say to the woman 9am would be perfect.  The next morning we went down and nothing was ready she did ask ‘what we wanted’ but at this point I wanted to just leave as it was so cold! 

When we had returned from the wedding there was a note pinned to our door advising us that check out was at 10:30 and she would be going out at 10:45 prompt so basically hurry up

Not a pleasant stay at all and I would not recommend 



Wouldn’t recommend 

Worth the money just to sleep in a 400 year old house that lhas a bit of history to it. Twin room was large, bathroom small but adequate, bed linen and towels clean, lovely view of the garden, information available, tea making utensils, beds comfortable.  Very welcoming hostess who seems halppy to answer my numerous questions about all the wonderful "stuff" that is in the house.  We only had one night, for a wedding, but would have liked more. Not that hard to find if you do your homswork beforehand.  Lovely and quiet at night.

Delightful

We stayed here for one night in order to attend a wedding at Hedingham castle. I've never stayed in a house quite like it! It's full of wonderful curiosities and you feel like you have stepped back in time with the decor and surroundings. I agree that the signage needs to be clearer at the road edge... we drove straight past.

Good points
Delicious, well cooked breakfast, along with freshly squeezed orange juice and homemade conserves.

Kettle could only be boiled on the floor (wires)
Shower was cold- though my husband got it to work through some wizardry by turning the dial around and back 
Not en suite... Thank goodness for modesty dressing gown 
Perhaps a little more warmth and enthusiasm from the host. 

We enjoyed the bed and the breakfast for one night. 

Not sure we would return though it is a beautiful house in a beautiful location. 

A Curiously pleasant stay

We booked Olliver's Farm as an overnight stay for a wedding at Hedingham Castle. In pre-arrival communications with the owner she informed us she would be unavailable during usual check-in times but was happy for us to arrive late morning which really suited our arrangements. She was also happy for us to have keys and come and go late after the wedding.
Although we found the place with ease in daylight the sign at the end of the long driveway is very low down and could be easy to miss especially in the dark. The rooms are large, comfortable and clean where this is necessary. When you visit a house of this age and size you have to accept a bit of dust and a few cobwebs! The whole place is very well presented and has a real home from home feel with interesting books, furnishings and pictures. The beds were really comfortable with good pillows. 
We did not try the breakfast as we had arranged to eat out with friends but the menu looked good.
The twin room is en-suite but the double is not. This is not made clear on Booking dot Com.
The Wifi was patchy working in one room but not the other, but is free. They take only cash or cheque not cards as advertised on their Booking dot Com entry although I was told this when I asked during a phone call before arrival.
All in all a pleasant stay in lovely peaceful surroundings.
