The room was lovely and clean,  bed was very comfy. Food was amazing,  evening meal excellent.  The cooked breakfast was one of the best we have ever had. Will definitely be back. Ideal base for the train to different locations. 

Superb stay and very relaxing.

Beautifully refurbished hotel run by a lovely family in a pretty village. Nicest place we stayed in along The Wall. Food was excellent, we went with the Thai dishes for our evening meal but if we lived locally we would simply work our way through the menu. Very friendly barman and waiting staff, hotel pub had a lovely atmosphere and local clientele were also friendly. Can't recommend it highly enough. Only issue is I now want to get new bed linen and a new bed when I get home, plus get better at cooking!

Brilliant place to stay

Great pub with rooms - which manages the tricky task of being a locals' favourite and also welcoming to tourists/walkers/archaeologists.
I stayed for 12 nights when digging at Vindolanda and it was very convenient. The rooms are spotless and modern, the food is good and varied, including Thai and an excellent breakfast.
And you have the added attraction of spectating on the local sports - including the rare Northern quoits on the village green, played with heavy metal rings, or the pool/darts matches.
There are lovely walks on your doorstep both flat (over the foot bridge on the Tyne to Allenbanks) and more challenging (up to Vindolanda and the Wall). There are great bus and train links to Newcastle and Carlisle.
The staff are, without exception, really friendly and great at their jobs and the landlord (who is also a great guy) is lucky to have them!

A Great Place for a short or extended stay

Nice evening bar meal here in pleasant surroundings.  Welcoming and pleasant staff.  We arrived quite late but providing a meal presented no problem.  We wouldn't hesitate in visiting again if passing by.


Nice bar meal.

Comfortable room with ensuite shower room.  Overlooked the pottery and had a small balcony.  Also had small kitchen area and table, plus two comfy chairs.  Food was great and staff helpful.  Ideal for sites on Hadrian’s Wall.  Bardon Mill even has its own railway station.  Parking opposite is limited but there was always room there or by the roadside.  Pottery also worth a visit!

Cimfortable stay with good food.

Stopped off for lunch on the way to Vindolanda Roman fort which is about  a mile and  a half away. Easy parking directly outside in this quaint little village (about two mins off the main road) with a Pottery and  other stuff to see. Good dog friendly bar area with a varied menu, including good vegetarian options…nice decor with a cozy fire and friendly effective service, all at very reasonable prices. Very accommodating when my partner wanted chips instead of ciabatta in her aubergine lasagne dish…one of the best apple and berry crumbles I v ever had…all excellent food made on the premises.

Fab lunch

My daughter and I had a fantastic stay, only for one night. I wish it could have been longer. The room and facilities were 10/10. It’s evident that so much thought has gone into making guests feel as comfortable as possible with so many kind and thoughtful touches demonstrating the guest’s experience is paramount. All of the staff I interacted with - front of house duty manager, the publican and the breakfast cook/cleaner were professional, friendly and kind. The village itself is gorgeous and handy to Carlisle and Newcastle. I will definitely be back.

An absolute gem.

I mean it, this place has real heart. It was clear that everyone we met cares about going above and beyond to deliver the most fantastic service at The Bowes. Our room was gorgeous (We stayed in The Sportsman) The food was absolutely delicious (and to prove it, we stayed on for late Sunday lunch after Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast – we may never eat again!) The people who run The Bowes - the bar staff, the waitresses and the cleaner were just so organized as a team, so professional and as welcoming to us as the roaring fire in the hearth. Downstairs at The Bowes is one single, open and animated room in which we saw people drinking and eating, pool and poker played, a couple of children playing quietly on the floor and people laughing and talking to each other unless they wanted to huddle in a corner or in the booth for a romantic chat. Honestly, it was a pleasure to have spent time there and we will definitely return.


This Place Has Real Heart.

We stayed here for one night, we were visiting friends for a birthday party. This b&b was lovely. The room was lovely and clean and nice and modern. It was a little on the small side but there’s not much they can do about that. The breakfast was nice. We were asked to order the night before this was ok for us but others might not like it. The only reason I have given 4 stars is it was £100 for one night which for us was a little on the steep side. We wouldn’t normally pay that but it was for a friends 40th birthday.

Lovely B&B

Stayed here for a night on the way to Hexham on business. Nice quite location, food excellent & reasonably priced. Lovely clean warm modern rooms

Staff are great and very friendly.
