absolutely awful service, we sat down for some drinks on a friday evening and after about an hour, a worker approached us asking us to finish our drinks and leave for no reason apart from that we were “making her feel uncomfortable” the manager was bought over and he told us the same thing, he was very rude about it

Massive disappointment as service, food and value all way below par. We had to find our own space outside in the marquee by combining three tables and chairs to provide seating for our party of 8. Where were the staff?  Studied the limited menu carefully before we all placed our orders for starters and mains with beef brisket pie and steaks proving popular. The manager took our orders to the kitchen only to return with the news that they had no beef left!!  This was 7,30pm on a Wednesday evening - how badly managed was the kitchen to achieve such an unwelcome stock out. We studied the menu again but with far less enthusiasm. I ordered the beer battered cod and chips with mushy peas - these came with the onion rings i had ordered to accompany my steak. How stupid not to check that i still wanted them after the cancelled steak episode!
The cod was dry and unappetising as was the plasterboard batter. I left most including the chips. As a Yorkshireman, i have sugar on my mushy peas but the kitchen said they had no loose sugar only white knobs - useless. Most others had diverted to the luxury fish pie. Oh no it wasn't, it was just lumpy mashed potato with the odd bit of white fish and salmon.
After a few ices etc for pudding, we all asked for coffees and teas. No this was not possible as they had no hot water. This had become the modern day equivalent to "Fawlty Towers" but minus any of the amusement. I have not had such a bad evening supper for some time.

Disastrous evening for our business party

Rooms are very nice and comfortable, good coffee bags and fresh milk in the corridor fridge to make yourself a drink. Pub staff were friendly enough, it's a pub with rooms not hotel so won't get a decent check in etc. 

No parking for pub. Lots of on road free (time limited) parking outside and I found a cheap pay and display not far away which was more convenient than having to move my car multiple times. 

No option for breakfast. M&S foodhall near by which was best option I could find for working day start time.

My room overlooked the beer garden. Pub is obviously very popular, lots of fun being had during my stay which made it hard to sleep before closing time. Again no issue if you're not working the next day etc. Windows aren't double glazed.

I'd avoid for business stays but would stay for a few nights for leisure. It's in a lovely location

This pub was not a bad place to stay for a night or two. The room itself was evidently recently refurbished to a high standard as was the bathroom. Pity they missed the opportunity to install double glazing! The traffic noise was intrusive. We were there on a Thursday evening and the bar was not noisy by the time we went to bed. There is no real parking. The manager did indeed lack charm and seemed to be too busy to welcome us properly. It is a busy pub and he seemed short staffed. But overall not bad value.

A reasonable place to stay

Love this place.
The Boss is great, welcoming and always looks after us.
The real ale is first class and the food is fantastic.
We have stayed here getting for 5 times now and it just gets better.

Dining at The Old Cock Inn is a Must! For the Sunday Roast lunch - beef, chicken, pork, vege Wellington were ordered by a large group of players from our Tennis Club.
The consensus for each meal was 'delicious'
The staff were amazing - super friendly and wonderfully efficient.
Fantastic wine and drinks selection.
All In all - 5 Stars!!

It's a Must- dine at The Old Cock Inn, Harpenden.

Very abusive and incompetent manager.  He kicked us off an empty table that had no “reserved” sign, didn’t apologise, then said we could leave, but refused to give us a refund. He said he didn’t need to improve the process or service because he had guaranteed business. I’ve never come across such an inhospitable inn.

The room I got here was cosy, clean, and comfortable. Staff were friendly and helpful. Very minor inconveniences we’re a shared fridge for milk, which was empty when I went to make a cup of tea in the morning however, this may not have been the owners fault.

The maintenance of the rooms 
(Front door was open all night due to a faulty lock and was told this doesn’t affect my stay. Damp marks on the ceiling and extremely cold as there was no heating (which we were promised would be fixed) with sash single glazed windows. Bathroom had old guest hairs on the floor and 1 towel was provided for 2 people) 
was sold as a “Super King Suite” yet was simply two single mattresses pushed together on one base and then told that was adequate. This is definitely not okay yet was told it was a super king mattress and two bases. 
No room service provided all night and no phone in the room to contact downstairs as they were “too busy”.

Very bad

I don't know what is going on at this once fine establishment.  Popped in tonight for a couple of pre meal g&t s only to be refused service at the bar. Table only - if you can wait that long.  Unfortunately we could not hang around.  On suggesting that refusing to serve customers was probably not great business I was told " thats your opinion".  Needless to say the pub was very empty.
