Booked a short stay at Close House, a long awaited revisit for my mother in law who knew and loved the place in the 1950s. 

She had just the most amazing experience, everyone was so friendly, accommodating, and helpful - the Close House team could not have been more lovely.

The room was excellent, beautifully clean, plenty of space and super comfortable.

And the breakfast was superb.

All in all a surprisingly great experience - thank you everyone so much. A great place to stay. We will be back.

Somewhere quite special

We had Sunday Lunch at Close House today. Great location. The food was very good and the staff were very attentive, knowledgeable and helpful.
My mother, who hadn't been before was very impressed.
Made her feel special.


Great Sunday lunch

Impeccable stay.
From the moment we arrived the staff were so attentive .
The  courtyard apartments made the weekend truly memorable.
Underfloor heating in the bathroom was a very nice touch, as was the heated towel rail and air conditioning plus a huge corner settee .
The golf courses were both top notch and the greens superb.
Excellent balcony overlooking the golf course where you could relax and enjoy a drink.
The set menu for dinner offered a good selection  and the breakfast menu although somewhat locking in choice was excellent.
The chef certainly knows how to make porridge.
An excellent venue .

“Impeccable stay”

Fabulous stay. Food, Room, grounds, staff, everything was excellent. Will be returning soon for a relaxing break. Golf grounds are superb.

Stunning break

I have stayed at Close House many times now and have refrained from leaving a review because I didn’t want the place to get too busy because it’s brilliant!! All the team work hard to ensure that I am looked after! Special mention to Helen and Rose and Alex Brown who really go that extra mile! The accommodation is spotless and excellent, the food is always amazing, breakfast fantastic and for me it’s a real home from home. Hope it’s stays that way!! Oh, yes, the golf courses aren’t that bad either! Very friendly and happy people!! 10/10

Class people, class place in every department!!

I gifted a little overnighter to my husband on Christmas morning as we had decided to not give thoughtless gifts of more stuff.
This hotel is only 25 minutes from our house but because its a golf hotel, I never really thought about staying.
The drive is pleasant and once you arrive on property and see how vast and well kept the golf course is, you can understand why its a golfing dream.

The rooms are located in the stable conversion and are large, it's a tiny bit corporate for me but they are definitely clean and well maintained. The bed was huge the most comfortable we have stayed in for a while and the bathroom was the size of a small apartment.
We were booked on a dbb deal and it was such good value.

We ate at No19 for both dinner and breakfast from the set menu and every item was amazing. No complaints at all, the restaurant is beautiful and the location perfect. Our waitress Kim on the evening was the loveliest lady, polite and natural, obviously loves her job and definitely put the effort in to make us feel welcome. The breakfast girls were so happy and smiley for a Sunday morning shift. 

The grounds are understandably gorgeous, so beautifully manicured and a walking brochure is available if you fancy a stroll. My only disappointment was that you can not actually visit Close house its self as it is a private residence. Its understandable, I would not want tourists wandering about my back garden but its a nice use of the vast land to have it a golf course. I would like to point out that neiter of us play golf but had the nicest time regardless and the staff are so polite and friendly.

I would definitely recomend a lovely relaxing stay at Close House!

Beat the January blues

First of all the positives…a fabulous courtyard room..very spacious and luxurious, with everything we could wish for supplied, although we were surprised that there was no USB port to charge phones and iPads. Luckily the lovely receptionist let us borrow her plug with a port. Thank you to her! 
All was going well and we were looking forward to an enjoyable breakfast, when to our horror we discovered we could choose only one item from the breakfast menu. One! As someone who likes cereal, toast and juice for breakfast, I was not happy that I could have toast, but had to pay extra for the granola cereal.. no other choice of cereal by the way! The waitress had a word with someone senior who very kindly agreed that I could have the granola AND the toast at no extra charge! There was no juice on offer..we had to ask for it and while my husband was happy with his cooked breakfast, he too would have liked extra toast and cereal. On principle we were not prepared to pay for items we felt should be included in a bed and breakfast deal. The poor breakfast actually spoilt our stay as it is 50% of what you pay for on a break away. 
I notice that another reviewer has also expressed their dissatisfaction at the breakfast, and no one on senior management has had the good manners to respond, which is appalling for a place such as Close House. It would be nice if I could get a response from them but feel they’re too busy catering for the golfers to respond to a couple who thought they’d enjoy a luxurious night away. A response would be appreciated!! I won’t hold my breath!

Disappointing breakfast

We recently stayed at Close Hotel for a two night golf break in their luxurious Pavilion with two friends. The building is a converted cricket Pavilion in the middle of the Filly course. It is absolutely beautiful accommodation in a unique location. 
On arrival the Team had got the place cleaned asap so we could have a very early check in before we played our afternoon round on the Filly course. This was a huge advantage to us as it poured with rain after about 15 holes so we could simply walk up to the house and get in having previously unloaded our luggage. Fabulous straight to a G and T! 
The Pavilion is superbly appointed for the most part with two almost identical en-suite bedrooms plus living space. There are no cooking facilities in the kitchen which had very little in the way of crockery stored there. Not a bowl for nibbles for example.
Then we were collected by golf buggy to go up to the restaurant for dinner the first night. It is quite a way by buggy and the weather was foul; no fault of the hotel. 
However on arriving at restaurant 19 that’s where it all began to disappoint. We were given one menu sheet with a choice of three courses or we could order off the a la carte menu  with a £25 per head allowance towards dinner. I did not book the hotel so not sure if this was communicated to us at the time of booking. It all felt very cheap given we had booked and paid £1200 per couple ( total of £2400) for a two night stay with golf, dinner and breakfast. Whilst the food was good both nights it does not have the feel of a top class restaurant. There are no table clothes and the food choices and guests have a very “blokey” feel to them.
My horror came at the first breakfast, we were given a sheet with breakfast items on them . No buffet breakfast which suits me and the items were listed as expected, cereals, fruit, yoghurt. Then other items. Then cooked options. We were told we could have one item. ONE ITEM????? What the heck we couldn’t have cereal plus a cooked breakfast for example. I queried this with the server and she said No only one choice ( however the cooked one came with free toast!). When I complained saying we had paid £1200 for this she said it was not her position to take on board my complaint. I was appalled. We had stayed at The County at Ayckiffe a small pub with rooms on our way up,north for £135 and had a way better food offering for a whole heap less money! Our friends had a similar experience when told that there was no diary free option for butter with toast. Come on what decent hotel does not cater for food intolerances these days???? 
The whole thing felt like they were “nickel and diming” the experience for no good reason. Reservation Team please get onto this absurd set of Rules about  a “ food package”. We booked direct with you into your most expensive accommodation to play golf. It felt more like a cheap GolfBreaks package where you have been conned by a low headline price for a stay. 
On a good note the food was very good. Memorable staff were Will, Jack, Melissa and Helen who all excelled  in their roles. 
If I were to come back it would be in the summer. We had to buy hedgehog wheels to play the courses which were indeed very wet and boggy. You could see that they would o,any beautifully in The drier months.

Nickel and Dime experience

Gathered with a small group for a reunion dinner
Food mediocre at best  meat and potatoes  veg almost non existent  and nest pretty tasteless 
The pudding was so excessively sweet as to be almost unpleasant 
And all quite expensive.  A golf club  lounge  trying to be a restaurant but not succeeding 
Wine £14 per glass lime  snd soda £4.20   Seems expensive 
Staff pleasant and helpful but under pressure so long waits at the bar to be served 
Maybe on if you want food after golf but definitely not a restaurant for a night out

A disappointment

An ‘Excellent’ rating doesn’t really do it justice; our visit was verging on ‘Exceptional’.

We played the Filly course after a light lunch on the day we arrived. It was in superb condition with fast and consistent greens, well-cut fairways and semi-rough, and wild rough (well off line, we never went there 😉)

We stayed in The Pavilion, a lovely two-bedroomed cottage in the middle of the Filly, and right beside the Yearling course, a fantastic, very short 9-hole pitch and putt, which provided us with a little competition prior to playing the Colt course on the second day.

Dinner in the No.19 restaurant was excellent, with a good choice and consistently superb cooking and presentation.

The Colt course was quite different to the Filly, longer and a much tougher test of golf, but equally beautifully tended and presented. Again, the greens were fast and consistent, and a joy to play.

The staff throughout our visit were all fantastic, well-trained, professional, friendly, motivated and eager to provide the highest quality service. Well done!

I’ve played and stayed at some excellent and top golf courses over the years. Close House was amongst the very best in my experience, and a truly memorable experience.
