We attended as a family of 8 and a dog to this lovely public house on a Sunday. From the second we walked through the door, the young chap who served us and took us to our seats was pleasant and friendly. He looked after our two young children so well, got them colouring and drawing to keep them occupied without evening prompting. We had a dog with us and he made sure he had a biscuit and some water which was very sweet. 
The meal itself was delicious, all 8 of us complimented how tasty it was and we absolutely loved it here. We don’t live in the area however if we were to ever return. We would 100% come back here. Thanks so much!

Brilliant meal & fantastic hosts!

We really enjoyed our stay here! The room was in need of a bit of TLC but it had everything we needed and was very comfortable. The building is really a beautiful historical gem and the staff are absolutely great. Very approachable and friendly and helpful.

Lovely hotel

The staff at this hotel are lovely, welcoming and very helpful.  Sadly the hotel itself is tired and in need of some TLC.  The room was very clean but the walls were scuffed with deep dents in places.  There was a hole in the bathroom door, holes around the bath panel and the carpet threadbare around the door area.  Our evening meal was not good either, we had to change table as there was chewing gum underneath the edge of the first table, we told the waitress about it as it disgusts us that people would do this. We both had the beef and ale pies which were filled with only gravy, we searched but there was no beef to be found plus the vegetables with the pie were luke warm. I really couldn’t eat it and so my meal that night was ice cream from the dessert menu.  We did mention this to the reception desk who said they would tell their supplier about the pies.  In the room there was a choice of teas and coffee, I was pleasantly surprised to find Green Tea with Jasmine, it is the only tea I drink in the mornings so this was a brownie point for them.  I know this belongs to a chain of hotels so hopefully they will start giving this beautiful old building a much needed update in all areas.

In need of TLC to update this hotel.

Emily served me and it was really good. Very polite and professional. The food is very good. I have eaten here many times and my favourite lunch meal chicken, Bacon and smashed Avocado. The pies are very good, as are the steaks. Good value for money!

Very nice place to relax

I stayed at The George Hotel for over a month during my relocation from the states and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. Everyone has differing expectations for hotel stays and my stay was certainly much longer than most, but I found my experience to be very pleasant and eathful. Some of the staff became my little family away from home and were always accommodating, caring and friendly. 

The building is five centuries old, which isn’t uncommon in many parts of Europe but it is nevertheless fascinating (especially as an American), and with age comes wear and tear as well as creaky floors (which I love), especially in a hotel that isn’t meant to be luxurious; if these things bother you, don’t stay in hotels that were built before white people colonized America. 😊

My bed was always comfortable, the water was always hot and I enjoyed every meal I ordered (which were plentiful since I ate dinner there almost nightly). I also found the overall atmosphere very inviting and cozy. 

I am forever grateful to the staff for making me feel welcome and taken care of.

First Hotel Stay in the UK

This was my second stay in the hotel. I booked it happily second time after outstanding first staying. What a disappointment. The staff are nice - that didn't change much but everything else did. I was put in tiny little room at the back of the hotel. On arrival i noticed how dirty it was and not updated at all. The bed was against the wall which wasn't good and didn't allow me to sleep well. The mattress was old and dented in the middle which again made the comfortable sleep impossible. whole hotel was dirty and not kept very well. in the morning I noticed old cobwebs on the ceiling.
I went for dinner and ordered the same starter as last time and he disappointment in that :(. the squid wasn't cleaned properly it was chewy and the waitress just put the dishes on the table, never checked if it was ok, nor she asked when taking the starter away. Breakfast was not the best either.
Overall i think i will be looking for different hotel to stay during my business trips.

dissapointed

Very friendly and helpful staff but the George really does need upgrading. A definite rundown feeling to the room (especially the bathroom) and the corridors (water stains and damp on the walls). Dinner was fine - average pub fare. Strange for a Green King pub hotel not to have any draft ale available. Breakfast was excellent when it came, but a half hour wait for the food?  Not sure I would return.

Tired - but very friendly staff

Leon, at Reception, was extremely helpful in resolving an accommodation issue for me - which had nothing to do with his hotel.  There was no requirement for him to assist a complete stranger, but he did so with charm and efficiency.  An exemplary employee - many thanks.

An exemplary employee

Quaint colourful courtyard, country house interior, well equipped bedrooms, everything you needed for breakfast. Excellent treatment by staff. And an appreciated stair lift!! Free car park for guests. In town! Personally a walk in shower would have been perfect

Enjoyable stay

Attended for a fathers day meal as a group of 6. 4 starters ordered, only two were processed, 6 mains ordered, only 4 processed.
Long delays between courses even though it wasn't overly busy.
Delays in removing plates from table when the courses were finished.
Staff claimed it was a "team error" when questioned.
Manager did, as a resolution, amend the bill to apologise however that in itself took a while to get resolved.
