all the negative reviews do not lie , I am never staying here again , the cold fried breakfast made me want to vomit it was that awful DO NOT STAY HERE !

what a dump

the owners are so rude , the food was disgusting and the rooms were just as bad needs closed down   , didn't feel welcome and prices of food was shocking also food was discusting  and she watched you the time you were eating and if you went out she would question your evey movement you make in garden or inside premiesis

We stayed here in Oct, and we got a phone call from the owner to say that she was making home made soup and sandwiches, and would we like them on our arrival, well o thought that this was really kind of the owner, so I accepted also added breakfast in with it, so I gf AVE her my car details to take the payment, but I was charged £64 for the room when it was only £54 and the total bill was £89.50, we arrived at the hotel and got this horrid soup, and it had a spice to it, I've never tasted anything so revolting in my life, we then went to our room that was just as bad as the soup.   The whole place stunk of hash and mould. There was no heating on, the bed was falling apart and the mattress was stained and so were the pillows, the whole room looked as it it hadn't been cleaned in years. We lasted approx 45 mins in this place . We hadn't even opened our cases and knew that we couldn't sleep here. We told the owner that we were leaving and said to her that no way could we sleep here. We weren't offered any kind of refund even though we never ate the sandwiches or soup. So glad to get out of that place. even the t bag that we were given was dated in 1985 and the uht milk was 6 months out of date.          PlEASE DON'T BOOK THIS PLACE IT NEEDS CONDEMNED.

After receiving a phone call on our way to the property, we were asked if we wanted a soup and sandwich lunch on our arrival.  We agreed but to my own fault I didn't ask a price.  When we arrived an interesting soup was given, but with old stale value bread and some horrible ham sandwiches.  We were shown to our room, which was dated to say the least and told we had to share the communal bathroom.  It was freezing. She turned the heating on for a couple of hours, but it was turned off before morning.  At about 1am the fire alarm went off for about 5 mins waking us up.  In the morning we were given a 'full English' which consisted of very greasy cheap and nasty food with the other half of the value roll fried up and some sliced boiled potatoes with cheese on top.  It was horrible. After breakfast I asked what I owed and she said £38...... for soup and an awful breakfast! DO NOT EAT THE FOOD!!! On our way out my husband was witness to the elderly couple screaming at each other using every profanity under the sun, we quickly made our escape £38 lighter.

The most God Awful place I have ever 'stayed' in. We lasted less than an hour before packing and getting the hell out of dodge.

Place looked like a jumble sale explosion. The strong smell of hash in the hallway on arrival was an indicator of where this visit was going.... Rapidly downhill. Owner was polite enough on arrival. We had been offered soup and sandwiches on arrival. The 'soup' was like nothing on earth I have put in my mouth before. This foul smelling homemade concoction had every food group known to man in it. I only ate it out of good manners. I didn't get as far as the sandwiches which had some discoloured ham poking out of them. Foolishly we Pre ordered cooked breakfasts for the morning. An aside.... On the floor in the fireplace was a stuffed cat! The bedroom was horrendous. The 'hospitality' tray had teabags from the 19th century, the uht milk was five months past its use by date. The kettle took longer than we eventually stayed to boil and looked and smelled likely to burst into flames. The toilet and shower were minging. Health and safety would havd a field day with the missing / broken smoke detector and the electric fire on the wall next to the shower door. The toilet took 4 attempts everytime u needed to flush, a bit like trying to start a 1970s Ford cortina on a cold day. The radiator was on but barely heated the room up. Only one damp smelling bath towel and one hand towel were provided for two of us. The bed was the last straw for us. The mattress was knackered and like lying on a board full of nails sticking out. The bed itself was coming apart with dirty sheet in one of its drawers. The pillows were compressed to wafer thin and the duvet was the same. Again all smelling damp, stale and unwashed. After 20 minutes in bed our minds were made up. Get the hell out of here. Made our excuses and legged it. Being Pre charged for two bowls of questionable soup, sandwiches from last week, and two cooked breakfasts that we didn't get for £35 and then being overcharged for the room itself in this hovel made was a truly memorable hour of our lives. Im still feeling itchy from the brief 20 minutes in bed. Please please please avoid at all costs.

God Awful is high praise

The owners of this ‘guest house’ are the most awful people ever and should be absolutely ashamed of themselves, the place needs to be shut down! I’ve never wrote a review before but this place is so shocking I just had to write one. 

On arrival we was first greeted by the ‘wicked witch of the north’ (LITERALLY), a separate couple was on their way out the door as we heard them discussing with the owner how they were refusing to stay. (MAJOR RED FLAGS) 

 Myself and my partner was pressured into eating some stale left over sandwiches and soup which we repeatedly declined, however as she would not stop, out of politeness we ate it, (this was the wrong thing to do!). Next thing I know we were scammed and charged a ridiculous price of £38 for some disgusting manky sandwiches/soup that you wouldn’t even feed to a dog. DO NOT EAT HER FOOD!!! she has a way of being all nice at the start and making you feel like she is a good natured person and that she is giving you food out of the kindness of her heart (I.e., sandwiches lol). As soon as I took a bite out of the sandwich (all the while she is just stood in the room watching you like a hawk, most awkward thing ever), she then went from nice to shockingly rude and aggressive DEMANDING that I now owe her £38?!!!

The place was freezing and dirty, ive left with a rotten cold. Most shocking Customer service ever, the lady was so rude and confrontational ...once we had paid! I truly can’t believe the night we just encountered, camping would have been a better option  AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!!!!!

The landlady rang me the day before I arrived to ask me what time I was coming and if I wanted dinner. The food was not included in the booking so I asked her the price of it. All she said was that she didnt know what I wanted yet and it won’t be much. I said yes to the dinner as I believed her and thought it would taste decent.

When I first arrived at Wheel Gate guesthouse I got there earlier than I originally told her the day before. I did however ring her once I had got to the coach station to tell her a more accurate time of when I would get to her. She it was fine and that she would be around. When I arrived I had to ring the doorbell twice and call before I was let into the house and shown my room. (Turns out she was sunbathing at the time of my expected arrival!) 

Before I was showed my room she asked me what I wanted for dinner. I asked her what she had and she told me two options. I chose Turkey mash and vegetables. When it was dinner time she gave me some soup to begin with (though she hadnt told me about the soup beforehand). The soup was really odd. It seems to be overcooked since it was slightly white on the top, (i’m assuming from the broth) and tasted a bit off. I only ended up eating the vegetables in the soup which tasted ok.

Next was the main course of turkey, mash and vegetables. The turkey she told me about was actually pre-cooked turkey wafers straight out of the packet that one would normally put into a sandwich.  She put cheese on EVERYTHING which I found very strange. The stuffing was a pile of crumbles and I didn’t eat it. I then had a sudden need to go to the toilet and realised as a result of the dinner I had the runs! (The food was probably off!) 

After that she asked me if I wanted breakfast as well and I said no as I would be leaving very early for Leeds Festival. She asked if I wanted Sandwiches instead and though after the nasty dinner. I still said I would take the sandwiches. After she made the sandwiches she showed them to me and I thought they looked decent. I then asked her how much everything was. Then she told me that I owed her £25. I felt this was very steep as the food wasn’t even nice . I found it interesting that she was very quick to tell me what I owed her after I had accepted the food but when I asked about the price before she was making excuses as to why she couldn’t tell me and LIED about it not being that much money. 

I then told her that I didn’t have cash on me and would go to the atm in a few hours. She then said that if I could do it soon as possible that would be better. I then left for the ATM. When I came back from the ATM she then gave me my change of £5. Instead of a £1 coin she gave me a 50 cent. I let her know and she claims it was an accident. She then went to get my pound. It shows that she didnt count the money before she gave it to me. 

She then asked me where I live and I told her the name of the city. SHE THEN ASKED ME WHERE I WAS “ORIGINALLY” FROM ( quite forward and racialised since I am apart of an ethnic minority) I was born and raised in the UK, the same place I live now. She then proceeded to tell me that she had been to Namibia (though neither me or my family were from there) and that she LOVED AFRICA.

Once I had got to my room the Wifi passcode she gave me was incorrect as I had typed it 3x each on my mobile and iPad! Earlier she told me that if it doesnt work not to ask her anything about it. The room I had was clean and had pretty curtains. The bed was a bit creaky but was comfortable. 

When I woke up the next morning I got ready and waited for the cab that I had pre-booked the night before to take me to Leeds Festival. There was a misunderstanding with the address and they were in the wrong place. I decided to take public transport instead. The landlady said she had used the cab company for decades and that it was my fault. I told her that I was going to take the train. She didn’t even say bye. 

 My tip is do NOT buy her cooking!

Avoid if possible. If money is tight and you need a place to stay just DONT EAT THE FOOD SHE COOKS

Great location and very clean  and comfortable. A no frills guesthouse with breakfast  included but make sure to ask for cereals and fruit. The cooked food is eccentric. Otherwise good value and nice friendly  staff.

Just see the pictures and make your own mind up whether to stay or not...............no other words can't describe this place other than SHOCKING!  Even the locals couldn't believe we were staying at this place - sleeping in your car is a better option

By pass this one! It's shocking

Not an experience I would like to repeat. The rooms were outdated, mismatched bedding (4 different patterned pillowcases on our double bed) a single sheet put across sideways so it only just reached the top and bottom of the bed. The smoke alarm was not complete and the WiFi code didn’t work. The tea making facilities in the rooms were a joke, a travel kettle that had definitely seen better days, stale tea bags and out of date milk sachets. As for the breakfast for which we were charged £8 each , some reheated leftover potatoes with a bit of grated cheese on, a small cheap sausage, a piece of fried French bread, a greasy solid omelette thing a few baked beans a rotten tomato. Another family member asked to not have breakfast when they arrived and were told that she had already bought it in, ( they hadn’t actually asked for the breakfast) I am interested where she goes to buy in mouldy rolls. Wish we had had the sense to read trip advisor before booking. I just hope I can prevent someone else from experiencing what we did.
