We were looking around Southwell and were fortunate to visit the restaurant on an evening when it was open to non-residents.
There was a good choice of options on the menu: some traditional and other less familiar dishes were on offer. 
The chicken was lovely and the aubergine on lentil dahl was well-flavoured.
The highlight of the meal must be the basil ice cream covered in white chocolate served with raspberries. 
2 courses for £20 pp was very good value.
The cloakroom was spotless too.

A lovely evening meal

Had a very pleasant stay at this hotel. The staff are extremely helpful and very happy to help you wherever they can.

This hotel has a great feel about it, lots and lots of history in the building. 

The rooms are absolutely amazing, would definitely reccomend the four poster bed, so so comfortable. 

The hotel is right in the middle of the town, so central to anywhere you need to go and easily accessful from the local surrounding main roads. 

We stayed only one night, as working in Norwood Park down the road and found this was a great location. 

Very large free standing bath too, perfect for a hot soak after a long journey.

Overall a very pleasant stay and extremely reasonable price too. Would definitely like to visit again

Outstanding Value great rooms

Very warm and welcoming place. 
Staff and service is fantastic.
The building and interior is beautiful - I was astonished when I walked in.
Surpassed any expectations I had.
I shall definitely be returning in the future!

I had my husbands surprise 50th party in the Minster Suite. David and his team were absolutely amazing from start to finish and looked after us so well. Nothing was too much trouble. The buffet food was fantastic and all the guests commented on how lovely the food tasted. I would most definitely recommend!!!!!!!!!!

This quaint and historic hotel was a treat from check-in to check-out , 
Our room was in the old part and had a Four poster bed which was very comfy , also had an  on-suite with a roll top bath with overhead shower .
Breakfast was included the full English was delicious  , 

Romantic getaway .

Such an historic place dripping in history and so of great interest to followers of English history. Like most provincial hotels staffing is a problem. However Debbie who runs reception and the bar was wonderfully helpful and full of advice on the local area. Breakfast was excellent. 

A Taste of Past Years

Bed was comfortable but there were ink stains at the bottom of the white quilt, not goof for a first impression,  bed was comfortable however we kept losing the pillows down the back of the bed. 

We had room 3 , four poster suite £160 for the over night stay,  it was our wedding anniversary, Disappointed we couldn’t eat in the restaurant for the evening, had to go looking else where, we weren’t told we just saw the sign bar closes at 8pm. This wasn’t good as we wanted a nice relaxing day and evening enjoying a room priced at £160.
And wanted to enjoy the facilities and just relax, this wasn’t possible. So had to leave to find somewhere to eat.

Room at a glance looked beautiful, old and medieval looking, but then I noticed to small oil filled radiators were on instead of the main radiator, wasn’t too much of an issue it just ment it used the plug sockets and there wasn’t enough to use them and charge phones etc. a lot of road noise to the front but this we did expect from being at the front and an old building. Bathroom to look at was beautiful , I excitedly ran the bath to find the water was only Luke warm, so it was a dip rather than a luxury bath , on leaving the bathroom in a hurry as it was chilly I pulled the door closed and ended up with a huge splinter down the side of my nail ( painful )  luckily I had tweezers to pull it out and told my husband I would report on the morning as I was in nightware, hubby is a smoker so went up and down the stairs a couple of times , I then had him ringing me out of breath as he had sent me a picture he wanted me to see, MICE running round in the hall way but the door, reception and up towards the kitchen he said he saw at least 3 , he tried to catch the one as it was by him as he walked through but it jumped out his hands , so took pics instead.  

Morning after I spoke to the male member of staff who was working in the kitchen and breakfast room, I asked if he knew they had mice running round to him saying no we don’t , so I asked him to come to reception where it was lighter and showed him pictures, he said it’s that time of year, and wrote it in the maintenance diary, I then explained about my finger and said I had got the splinter out he said ok I will make a note for maintenance.

I was shocked at this as he wasn’t apologetic 
He didn’t mention reporting in the accident book 
But I did insist on showing him a photo as the wood / laminate king splinter was attached to the door and hanging off .  This I thought was appealing and no concern what so ever 

Breakfast room was lovely , food was adequate fresh fruit salad was the best part.  No offer of a refill on my tea and coffee was in a self service flask which I thought was poor . 

I would have been better staying in a bed and breakfast than spending £160 for an overnight stay with mice and ending up with splinters.

The little village was beautiful x 
P.S before writing here I reached out via messenger on their Facebook page sharing,pics they clearly saw and read message and no reply , this am I re messaged saying their was no reply , again it was viewed and nothing.

Beautiful historic hotel with fantastic room with four poster bed. Great breakfast with excellent service. Particular thanks to Debbie on reception who made us feel very welcome and especially for her local knowledge and excellent sense of humour.

Highly Recommended

After reading some reviews on this site and others I was a bit apprehensive prior to our arrival. That apprehension was totally unfounded. The Saracens Head has clearly struggled post COVID, with reduced restaurant/bar opening hours and staff retention. The reception staff couldn't have been more warm and friendly, even offering a cup of tea on arrival. There were issues with the heating but the owner had provided a portable oil filled electric heater and the room was nice and toasty throughout, even with an overnight temp of 3 degrees. The room and en-suite were clean and full of the character you would expect of a 14th Century Inn. Breakfast was very nice, with a choice of hot dishes, toast, cereals, fruit and juices and croissants. All served by attentive staff. My wife and I couldn't fault the stay to be honest.

Enjoyable stay despite the difficult times we are in

As customers returning for our 4th stay at this hotel and as regular customers in the bar and restaurant over the years, my husband and I were disgusted with our one night booking this Friday last, 4/5 November 2022. Expecting a warm welcome, with the bar, if not the restaurant to be  open for the Friday night we were told all would be shut by 8pm. There was no hot water in our room on our arrival at 2.30 pm. There was no central heating available, with 4 degrees overnight temperature on the BBC  Weather for that night. We were told by the owner, on complaint, that their gas bill had been over £3000 for the last month which did not allow for heating the room or bathroom. We had paid £140 for the privilege. That should not be the concern of the guests. No apology or refund for us not using any gas, was offered. Surely guests should be warm at least!  A minute plug-in radiator was in the room, which barely heated the curtains, where it had been placed. The bathroom was freezing with no heat being allowed to the towel rail.  Neither of us could bear showering in the cold bathroom. It was so cold overnight we had to wear our coats in bed! It was difficult to sleep due to the cold. There were no staff in Reception when we returned with fish and chips at 8.30 pm, there being neither food nor drinks available on site, with the bar and restaurant closed. In fact the whole premises looked closed with one measly table lamp lit in the lounge. Totally unwelcoming and a waste of money! In the morning the owner said he is to close the Hotel next month. He didn’t care! There was no one in Reception in the morning and no one to take our keys or ask about our stay. Please do not risk staying there, before they eventually close. It was the worst hotel experience we have had.
