We had the carvery, the beef was well cooked but small portion, uninspiring selection of vegetables, the sprouts were not edible, needed another 10 mins in the pan, the rest of the meal was ok, the service was good, had eaten in The Dolphin before, this time the meal did not impress.

Disappointed visit

Great pub food,good choice and very social staff. Dog friendly. The range of ciders are superb. Good range of pub food with all the usuals on the menu and the prices aren’t bad either. Looking forward to our next visits over the next few weeks.

Great pub food

We pulled off the A303 on the way to taking our daughter to university. It was a really hot day. The staff were friendly. We ordered standard pub grub; a jacket potato, a baguette and a veggie burger. It all came really nicely presented with a lovely fresh side salad and was tasty. A really nice find.

Lovely food

What an absolute delight it was to stay at dolphin . The staff are warm and welcoming and Liz and John the landlord could not do enough for me.  They made me feel very welcome and as I am crutches helped me with walking my dog and with any other special needs I had.  The rooms are spotless as is the Hotel itself.  The breakfast is out of this world with a fantastically clean breakfast room full of lovely fresh juices , cereals and other lovely goodies.  Then as if that wasn't enough you get the choice of either a freshly cooked delicious full English breakfast which was just lovely.  My partner is gluten free and without even having to ask Liz and John catered for his needs too supplying fresh gluten free options for him too.  Outstanding service.  Outstanding people.  I loved my stay with them and it was so lovely that I actually felt a little bit sad when I left.  This place has been made into a little slice of heaven and if you need a place to lay your head and be spoilt rotten then you should most definitely book at the dolphin.  I am 52 and with my old job had to stay in alot of hotels over the years but this place beats the lot hands down and I highly recommend it you won't regret it if I could give them good ten stars I would .  Absolutely super!!

A little slice of heaven

We booked 2 rooms as the family room had been taken. They were clean, tidy and good amount of tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Towels were good and bathroom was clean and functional.
The place is tired, but it is a friendly place and all staff were pleasent and helpful. The food was the best thing about our stay, mushroom risotto, burger that made my some eyes pop put, ham egg and chips were on another level.

I am gluten free and the next morning it was great to find they had gone out of their way to provide a seperate toaster, bread and cerials for choices, aswell as gf sausage on a gorgeous breakfast.

The only downside was we didn't know when we booked that there was a drum and bass evening on so it was loud, retiring to our rooms early with kids as it was too much. The music to be fair stopped at 11.45 and the security made sure all had exited.
It is what it is!! 

Good food and friendly

After not going out for various reasons over the past few months a walk across the road to The Dolphin for Sunday lunch was a real treat.
The food was delicious and plentiful and it was served up, piping hot, by lovely people. Isobel and I dined in their ‘family room’ and that was a delight. All too often restaurants don’t cater for families as such. Here small children had a play area and us others enjoyed comfortable seating and the hospitality of the Dolphin team. What a joy and one we’ll repeat ere long. 


A real teat in a traditional family hostelry 

There is a Michelin Star restaurant in a nearby village but from what we just experienced at the Dolphin, Wincanton could have one in the near future and I don't make that statement lightly.

We just enjoyed the Taster menu at 'The Stables' the newly opened restaurant there. Liz and John the proprietors are well travelled and have designed a menu of international flavours that was absolutely sensational. Every course was clearly cooked with love and was perfect.

When it was over, John, who is also the chef, came out of the kitchen and the restaurant spontaneously erupted into much deserved applause.

To be honest we hadn't known what to expect and were taken aback by the very high quality meal we were served. In the past we used to go to the old restaurant for perfectly good pub grub but the new Stable restaurant s much more sophisticated while being also friendly and relaxed.

All we can say is that for a romantic night out, a special occasion or anytime you just want to enjoy good food you should try it! We have already booked a special birthday party we were that impressed!

Amazing New Restaurant - The Stables at the Dolphin

Second family lunch in 4 weeks. Food was excellent good pub/inn food. Well cooked and plenty of it.  First time ham,egg and chips,steak and chips and smoked salmon with cream cheese salad and roll. This trip ham,egg and chips x 2,liver,mash and onion gravy and cheese toasties with chips and salad.We’ll be back again.

Excellent pub/inn food

We stayed here 2 nights so that we could visit the Haynes motor museum and the Fleet air arm museum. The Dolphin is situated in an excellent position for visiting both which are just a few miles away. Our stay was quite comfortable but could be improved greatly by extending the vegetarian choice on the restaurant menu  ! The dining room lacked any warmth and is purely functional. A bath mat for the shower would have made our stay much safer. Without exception all the staff are lovely and we look forward to a return visit. Thank you. 

Good choice when in Wincanton 

A one night stay for wife and myself following a visit to a National Trust property nearby. Large bedroom with coffee/tea making facility along with free biscuits to welcome us (a very nice touch), en-suite with power shower. Nice bar and lounge diner with excellent cooked to order food at reasonable price and ample large breakfast in the morning to set us on our way.  Staff very accommodating and friendly, all in all full marks all round. We will not hesitate to stay again in this little gem in centre of town when next in the area.
