Due to it being the height of foliage season, we lowered our standards a little for this reservation.  Yikes! When I saw the lobby, I really got scared. It looked like Heidi's Grandfather meets Pinochio.  The Swiss Chalet themed room with all of the nick nacks and clutter throughout - shabby and dimly lit was a shocker.  The elderly woman sleeping in the overstuffed chair was a little disarming as well.

Our room was really crazy.  To get to our room in the back of the building was a steep hill from the parking lot - had it not been somewhat lit, I think we would have broken our legs.  The only set of stairs was a long walk to the opposite end of the building. Wow.

Our room looked like it had not been updated since the 70's.  The huge TV sat atop an ornately painted bureau. The heat would not work.  It was 55 in the room and even turning the heat up to 75 did little to nothing. The next day an oil truck sat outside our window - problem solved after that. The only good thing I can say is the bathroom looked renovated and was clean.  The hot water and water pressure was like the "good ole days" before water saver devices.  When I turned it on, it was like a fire hose that literally blasted me to the back of the tub.  No worries about rinsing the conditioner out of my hair here.  Anyway all in all, we won't be going back.

Very Rundown in bad need of Updating

Yes, charming and a bit dated.  Old school, in town, not an "off the exit ramp, chain".   Rooms are clean and the beds comfortable.   Unfortunately the restaurant is closed.   Likely this was one of the grand hotels of yesteryear... Happy to stay there again.  Has tremendous potential!

Nice place to stay

Made an online reservation on the Dalem Chalet website for a room with two double beds for a sibling weekend.  This hotel is in West Brattleboro.  
We arrived in the dark and the lighting outside is poor, but just continue driving deep into the parking lot to get to the office and up a flight of stairs to a very beautiful door which will leads right into the office.  A very nice woman behind the counter checked us in and gave us room 22.
In spite of being dated, the room was comfortable enough, old style spring mattresses but a good shower, a small front porch overlooking the front of the hotel in an area which has a slightly rural feel to it.  If the hotel was to replace only its mattresses with the newer style hotel mattresses, I think most people would overlook the older style decor in the room.
If you're bothered by church bells every hour on the hour, this would be a problem for a light sleeper.  They're not very loud, but if you tend to tune into them once you know they're going to chime staying here may not work for you.
There is no restaurant here anymore, however, it's only a mile or two from the Chelsea Royal Diner which is an excellent place to have breakfast.
Overall, my sibling and I had a fine enough stay here, and it's not all that far from the center of Brattleboro.

Old style hotel, comfortable enough, good shower

I'm not sure what other reviewers mean by "charming" and "rustic."  If it's the fact that the rooms are decorated in a country decor with milk paint and ruffles, then sure.  But I don't consider a smelly room to be charming.  Nor a room where you have to stumble down a hill to get to a door that you can't really even see the number on because there are no lights on that end of the building .

If by "Chalet" they mean a 1950's style two story motel that hasn't been updated since the day it was built, then I guess I don't know what the word "Chalet" means.

When I checked in, I  was told by the gentleman there that the owner was sick and he was filling in.  He said I was supposed to have on the first floor but that it was still occupied, so he sent me to a room on the 2nd floor on the back side.  It was very confusing finding the access road to the back side in the dark.  Also, it didn't appear there was actually any place to park other than along the roadway, which really didn't seem like a good idea, especially since I would then have to climb down a grassy hill in the dark.  Which was made all the more difficult because there were no exterior lights, not just on the unit I was assigned too, but NONE of the units on that end of the building.  If I didn't have a flashlight with me, I probably would either have broken my neck or never got the key in the lock.

Once I was in the room, I was further disappointed by the musty smell of the room.  The room appeared clean, but it smelled!  It seemed like the room had not been opened for a month.  I would have thought that if you have to assign someone an alternative room, then someone would make sure that it was clean and fresh.  

I'm also confused why I couldn't have been assigned to another room on the first floor that I actually could have found and gotten into easily.  There were not that many cars there, neither when I checked in or when I left early (6:30 am) the next morning.

The isolation of the room on the 2nd floor was unnerving.  If I had know how bad this place was, i may have opted to sleep in my car.   This may have been the worst stay anywhere ever.

Run Away.  Run Far Away.

German charm. Clean and comfortable. Staff is outstanding. Our new haunt. Will be back for Oktoberfest on October 21st. The suite was spacious,and are looking forward to coming back for Octoberfest. 😀

Great German charm

I wanted to get a room close to the West side of Brattleboro so I could have a good start getting up and over Hogback Mountain. The chalet (motel) was up a steep road and was on the side of a hill. It is very reminiscent what you will find in the mountains of Switzerland.  

If you are looking for a place that is handicap accessible, this isn't a place for you.  The parking lot was unpaved. To get to the main level of the chalet, you have to walk up a flight of wooden steps. There is a narrow walkway to the rooms (just big enough for a chair). 

The room was rustic. Flat-screen tv but only 3 channels available. There was wifi. Being that this place was listed as a bed and breakfast, I was expecting maybe a light continental breakfast but there was nothing since the restaurant was closed.

If You Are Into Rustic, It would be okay.

This is not our first stay at this sweet old place. There are some negative reviews and my understanding is that there are some older rooms downstairs but we always stay on the mid-level or upper level. The beds are very comfortable and there’s lots of hot daughter and the rooms are always clean. There is a beautiful outdoor pool in the summer that they are just getting ready now. We saw them working on it. There are beautiful grounds if you want to take a walk and it’s a quiet neighborhood just off the beaten path. I would even consider giving them a four for the charm and so glad not to be staying at one of those big chemical filled places where you can’t open the window and everything looks exactly the same.
