My husband and I went to Allen Acres, not as professional plant folks, but just wanting to be outside and relaxed.  We came back having learned so much about plants and moths/butterflies.   We spent the weekend noted for having several plant walks with the infamous Dr. Allen and other botanists.  Dr. Allen is so gracious and shares his knowledge so easily and readily.  We saw a slide show in his home during supper our first night and then went out on a moth count during the late evening.  So fun and who knew there were so many moths?  The next morning we drove to Kistachie Forest and walked the forest looking and learning about plants and even saw some lamprey in a stream.  Unfortunately, we were too early in the season for many flowering plants and for butterflies.  But it was a different weekend and we enjoyed it so much.

The B&B is a home next to Dr. Allen's home.  It has 3 bedrooms on each end with a shared bathroom on each end of the house..  The rooms are plain but comfortable and quiet.  After all the walking, we would have slept well on a floor.  You share a kitchen and living room with other occupants.  There is a front porch with loads of hummingbird feeders to attract those hummers.  

Dr. Allen's wife, Susan, cooked us dinner each night.  Her oriental food was very good as she is from Viet Nam.  We also wandered down the road for lunch at a local gas station and it was some good catfish there.

Breakfast at the B&B was eggs from the chickens in the backyard, biscuits, and bacon.  It was fine.

You also see yard art and guinea hens wandering as well as friendly dogs running around.

Nature and more nature

and a very nice 5 or so room bed and breakfast  Very clean and comfortable but the real treat is a walk about with Dr Allen  who is a native plant expert with vast education, experience and a humorous, whimsical manner. Susan Allen does the delicious breakfast and makes sure everyone is comfortably taken care of. No restaurants nearby so some planning for dinner and snacks is necessary but breakfast is covered.  Big front porch, rocking chairs, friendly dogs, and so much peacefulness. Leave some stress and cares behind and enjoy life the way it used to be with lots of modern conveniences

26 ACRES OF NATIVE PLANTS...

We found this place by chance. On the first day of our driving tour of Louisiana. Out in the middle of nowhere, the owner is a botanist who will show you around his nature garden. You'll see moths, butterflies, fireflies and insects with bright green eyes that shine in the night. The breakfast was great and we left with a hand drawn map of Louisiana and a guide to where to go to see the state

Nature Trail

I couldn’t be more pleased with my visit to Allen Acres.  Dr. Allen and his wife, Susan, were wonderful hosts.  Dr. Allen is exceptionally knowledgeable about native plants and animals, and I thoroughly enjoyed the hikes he led around their property and in nearby Kisatchie National Forest.  Allen Acres is beautiful and well-maintained, inside and outside.  The accommodations exceeded my expectations.  The rooms were clean, the beds were comfortable, and the food was outstanding.  Susan made me feel right at home.  She cooked me special vegetarian dishes for every meal and even sent the leftovers home with me!  I highly recommend Allen Acres to anyone looking for a quiet, relaxing getaway.

I spent three nights at Allen Acres for a plant workshop. I had the whole house to myself and could not believe how quiet this area is.  No sirens, no dogs barking, no trains, no motorcycles, hardly any traffic at all.  The bed was very comfortable and the house was very clean.  My hostess was the most accommodating person I have ever had the pleasure to meet. Her cooking is amazing, whether you are having a breakfast of country eggs and biscuits or choose to spend a little extra for supper. I never left the property in three days.

Peace and quiet

This quaint little B&B is tucked back off the road on 26 acres of what seems like a nature preserve.  My wife and I visited in February though, so we weren't able to fully appreciate it.  The hosts, Susan and Charles, were very hospitable, and enthusiastically shared their love for nature and their impressive butterfly photographs.
The facility was bright and clean (almost obsessively so) and was comfortable.  On the down side, the water pressure for showering was rather sporatic, and the big screen TV was rendered useless by unreliable satellite TV service.  Cell phone service (at least for Verizon) was essentially nonexistent.
The breakfast was very basic, consisting of eggs (fresh from their own chickens), bacon, biscuits, and coffee. The food was good, but lacked the "flair" of other B&Bs I've stayed in.
The rates are relatively inexpensive, so this place is good if you just want a basic, no-frills roof over your head of if you're a nature lover who wants to explore their gardens.

No frills country livin'

This location is way off the tourist path for those visiting Louisiana. Charles and Susan Allen are most gracious hosts. The food is delicious and Susan will cater to your dietary needs. Charles knows more about native Louisiana plants than anyone. The accommodations are perfect for a group getaway with a nicely furnished common area to enjoy games and conversation. The grounds are perfect for butterflies, hummingbirds and hiking. I enrolled in a three day botany class taught by Dr. Allen on site for an additional fee.
