The rude receptionist would not approve that we had booked with Hotel.com and demanded a higher price than originally agreed. We have booked with breakfast, but that wasn't there either. Avoid this hotel - they are scammers.

Did not stay here but when rocked up they tried to ask for $175.00. We said NO since it was obviously a motel at the bottom of the pile and went to leave. The price dropped to $115 immediately with the lady behind the counter chasing after us!!

I figure that since we had an accent (we are Australian) it was gouge the tourist time but they didn’t think that we may have had some experience with motels prior to getting to Grants.

Avoid this flea pit like the plague…..

Horrible in Grants at the Sands

So many problems with this motel. Just to start if you are wanting a Route 66 motel this is NOT it. It’s on a side road and full of sketchy people. Upon check in the owner did not honor our hotels.com reservation and charged us more for our room. Getting into our room  there were crickets inside, the floor felt like you could fall through it in areas, holes in the walls, the toilet was duck taped down, there were 2 washcloths, 1 hand towel, and 1 bath towel (this is important for later), the ac did not work, and you could tell something was spilled in the fridge and never cleaned. It was so nasty we didn’t even shower, but did use 1 washcloth and the hand towel which were left on the bathroom floor when we left. A few hours after we checked out and left we noticed an extra $20 charge come through from the motel so we called to find out what it was. The owner proceeded to accuse us of stealing all of the towels and washcloths from the room and called us thieves and said he had video footage of us stealing them. #1 we wouldn’t even put our bags on the floor much less take anything from the room with us, #2 if he had cameras proving any of it he would be implying there were cameras in the room and bathroom. We saw other people complaining in reviews about how he charges and it’s no joke. We believe he targets tourists passing through to get as much money as he can because he knows that once they get a few hours from town that they won’t come back. I would never recommend Sands to anyone and would advise everyone to steer clear.

Owner scams people & unsafe area

First impressions were not good.  The lobby reeked of curry and the room reeked of a very powerful deodorant.  The walls and floors were in rough shape and not particularly clean.  The door had no chain or deadbolt.  The bathroom wiring was suspect, as turning on the ceiling fan turned off the bathroom light.  The bathroom floor was soft and caulking and seams a disaster.  Towels were stained.  There was no place to hang clothes and no reading lights.  You get the idea, a fleabag without the fleas.

On the upside, the wifi work.  The is a good Mexican restaurant one block down the street.  The heater did its job quietly. The furniture was a bit worn, but functional.  There was a table and a desk.  The room was large.  The sheets were clean and the bed was firm, but comfortable.  The plumbing worked.  The water wasn’t hot, but was warm enough for a decent shower.  The place was very quiet overnight and I got a good night’s sleep.

The price was cut rate, but I will not be stopping here again.


Okay for an Overnight if Your Not Picky

Chose the Sands based on historic value. Price was right too. We love motels on road trips as we can park in front of our room and keep an eye on  our rig. 

This place was easy to find. Checkin was simple. I was (not pleasantly) surprised to learn there was an additional $5/pp fee for the room, above what was advertised. Fine, just be transparent in advertising and posting prices. Every other policy/fee was obvious on the booking platform and in the office. 

Room was clean and quiet. While the hotel is historic, decor is more “early 90’s vintage” but functional. This was a good place to get a decent rest; we felt safe and comfortable and didn’t worry about leaving our truck and gear in the lot overnight.

I hallucinate when I see the comments!!!! We were greeted beyond acceptable. We had booked by an online agency but obviously we were neither expected nor welcomed the man who was at the reception it proved more than unpleasant by shouting at us that the room was non-smoking several times. The room was dirty. Under the heaps (bought to find catches) there were dead insects, the catcher was not attached to the wall, the microwave didn't work etc... No breakfast. When we left the tiny office and saw our insistence on the motel that a lady came or in a night shirt. We didn't see anything dirty for 21 days of travel but maybe this is not a good thing to do.

I do not understand the comments below, I did not experience any of it.. the host was exceptional, took extra care and was genuinely was taking care of us.

The place is definitely going under remodel and we had one of the newer remodeled room and couldn't ask for anything better... clean a d exceptional...

I will stay here over and over again...

The owner is old and their is bit of a language barrier and I believe people take that wrong.. 

This is America people... I truly loved it and will recommend to everyone I know.

Great place..

We were group of people traveling thru and came across Sands Motel in Grants, NM. 

This was by far more bang for your buck. Clean rooms, comfortable beds, no nonsense at all. Quick check in and very easy check out.

The front desk I believe is the owner as well was very informative and seemed he takes his place seriously and doesn't want trouble. Plus his accent his great. I had an amazing time talking to him. 

He and his wife really take care of the place and I visited this place few tears back and for sure they are making lots of changes. Truly love it, .

I recommend this place to all of my friends and family. I will certainly will be coming back.

Excellent place to stay, quite and clean

we recently stayed here on November 17 2021 and my husband had left his wallet there but the owner says they already checked n cleaned the room but we have already looked all in our belongs still no wallet I'm pretty sure the wallet is laying somewhere behind the furniture or in between the chair or couch. We even showed up with police and still the owner won't let us in the room to find it ourselves plus the owners were very rude n discriminating against Native American. We just want the wallet back? And I wondering if the owner just threw the wallet away because he was mad. So please we need to wallet back it has no money just important cards in there ???? Thank you plus the wallet is brown and the ID in there says Verick James ???

WARNING - STAY HERE AT YOUR OWN PERIL. Horrible, disgusting manager-owner failed to honour my Booking.com reservation. He attempted to extort more money out of me. After failing, he shoved a NO VACANCY sign in my face and forced me to leave. The place is a cheap, unkempt, dirty dump. Do not waste your time, money, nor energy coming here.
