During a recent trip to watch a local collegiate baseball game, we decided to stay at the famous Buxton Inn. We made a smart decision. While the size of the room was slightly smaller than a conventional hotel, the aura easily compensated for the lack of square footage.

The room was furnished appropriately, nostalgic to its era, which is precisely why we chose to stay there. Breakfast was continental style, but the “high-quality” items available made it more than sufficient. While the kitchen itself was still closed, the dining facility made you feel as if Abraham Lincoln was sitting just across the room.

The staff was both professional and exceedingly cordial. Stephanie, who cheerfully greeted us and promptly checked us in, also knew her history, an important part of the Buxton Inn’s charm.

Parking was both ample and easily accessible. The location of the Buxton Inn complex (multiple houses with accommodations) is truly serene. As for the stories about ghosts; not sure if the subtle little noises we heard meant anything, but just to be on the safe side I winked at Major Buxton.

In a nutshell, the Buxton Inn in Granville, Ohio is charmingly romantic, and well worth a visit for anyone who wants to step back in time whilst stepping away from the humdrum of conventional overnight accommodations!


A Step Back in Time!

With a daughter at Denison, we're making the rounds of the local hotels and we've stayed at the Buxton Inn twice, so far, and eaten at the restaurant twice. The first time we stayed in the Warner House room #1 and the second in the Pearl House room #3. The location in lovely downtown Granville is perfect - steps to shops, restaurants, sites, and Denison U. However our experiences with this inn have ... varied.
Although rooms are unique and charming, furnished with antiques and interesting art and light fixtures, they're missing an attention to detail. For example, the beds are comfortable and the sheets are clean and soft but the bathroom in Warner #1 was dated and dreary, with crusty brown corners, and the room itself poorly lit with too few light fixtures. In contrast, the bathroom in the Pearl room was updated and very clean, with marble tile and an extra fancy shower head, but the walk-in shower had no shelf of any kind to hold toiletries or soap, which had to be kept inconveniently on the shower floor.
And the staff comes hot and cold as well. While the folks who waited on us in the restaurant were lovely and efficient, the front desk staff varied from pleasant to dour. When I mentioned (very politely!) to the front desk person at checkout that the sink drain in our room had been backing up right from the start of our stay and needed a clean out she answered only "huh." And one experience with a bartender in the cozy bar was downright unpleasant - we left feeling like we had been an inconvenience to him. 
On the other hand, the historic buildings, atmosphere, and grounds are so interesting and attractive. Plus there was good live music and a cash bar in the delightful, quirky courtyard, creating a fun atmosphere right outside our rooms one evening of each stay. But (and there always seems to be a "but" here) there was lots of poison ivy in the overgrown vines right next to our car in the parking lot.
The food in the restaurant was fine to good but the free "continental breakfast" selection, available in the corner of the lobby, is weak, mostly just granola bars, yogurt, and sad fruit, and there's no complimentary bottled water - it's always an extra charge (hint to hotels: free bottled water makes me feel cared for and I instantly love you). Finally, there was a Keurig in both rooms but all the pods and creamers etc had to be fetched from the lobby daily.
We want to love this place and will likely stay here again, if we can get a room (the place books up quickly for popular Denison events, like Big Red Weekend), hoping next time it won't feel somewhat overpriced/overhyped for the quality of the stay as it has so far. The Granville Inn across the street is about the the same price but feels more luxurious and miles more friendly, and it's always booked up first.

Hot and cold

We have stayed at the Buxton Inn many times. Up until now, they have been great. However this week was not up to par. The 4th of july celebration is the busiest weekend of the year and instead of opening up the bar and restaurant, they closed both. The front desk personnel were rude, unaccommodating and not up to the service we received over the years. there is a reason they had rooms open during the busiest week of the year and I submit that the dop in customer service contributes greatly to their reduction in business. They really don't care if you stay there or not.
I suggest that you go across the street to the Granville Inn, you will have a better experience.  Their customer service is way better and their bar and restaurant stayed open all week.

Went to the Buxton for a Public Investigation. Ended up helping the team that was in charge run it. Gorgeous Building, Beautiful Piece of history. We didn't get alot Paranormal wise. probably due to the fact there were 40 other people doing the investigation but still a good expirience.

Three couples from Columbus made a decision to drive about 40 minutes to treat ourselves to an elegant dinner at the Buxton.  First of all we parked on the street and walked to the Buxton's front door and noticed our feet were sticking to the sidewalk as the trees had been dropping some berries and it appeared that the berries had been on the sidewalk for a long time.  Not the greeting I wanted!  When we got home the berries were still stuck to our shoes and car floor mats.  We had reviewed the menu online and the one we were given  was totally different.  Some of the entrees on their website were no longer available or ran out of food and when I asked the waitress she didn't have a good answer for us.   The prices were also much higher on their menu than what was on the website.  An example was the $12 burger became a $15 burger when we got there. The special chicken dinner I ordered had cold vegetables and chewy gristly chicken.  What a disappointment!

Pretty historic property, food at event fair at best. Busy night, staffing light as could be expected in all venues. Fun to walk through and imagine the conversation & deals made here many years ago. Would be willing to come back and order from menu.

Ate their once during pandemic. Food was bland and overpriced relative to quality. Service was bad. Figured it was just pandemic and we live down street so wanted to support them. Recently Bought 2 $100 bourbon tasting tickets from an instagram post they put out. Due to confusion (our fault and their fault) we missed the event. They’re having another bourbon tasting a few weeks later. They refuse to book us for that or even give us a gift card. Poor customer service can’t support them.

We stayed in Room #1 of the Warner House, it was everything we expected it to be.  Plenty of history, loved walking around the grounds looking at all the of homes and walking thru the tavern.  The most impressive part of our stay was our dinner!  I cannot rave enough about how wonderful the food was.  My husband had the Braised Pork Shank and I enjoyed the Seafood Chesapeake.  I rate our meals as one of the top 10 we have had in our 30 years of marriage, it was fabulous.  The staff was very friendly and I highly recommend this establishment!

30th Anniversary Celebration

We were visiting family in town and went to the Buxton Inn for dinner.   It was wonderful.  The food was delicious,  the atmosphere on the porch where we ate was very pleasant and our server,  Jade, was attentive and very friendly.  She did a great job!  After dinner we went to the lawn out back and listened to some live music. It has been a wonderful evening. I highly recommend the Buxton Inn.

Highly recommend

My son and I stayed in the Gold Room at the Historic Buxton Inn for two nights so that we could tour Denison University. Check-in staff was wonderful and accommodating. We were given continental breakfast items for the next morning. The room was perfect -- clean and spacious. We ate at four different restaurants just down the street, Granville is a cute, quaint town. Easy walking distance to Denison University.
