What a strange place. We booked it because of the decent price and good ratings, but I don't know how people can possibly like this hotel.
It started with a weird check-in. There is no front desk, so you have to wait outside the door until someone arrives from the street.
Our room was the Engineer's Office. The very high ceiling looks nice at first glance, but turns out to make it difficult to heat. We were there in autumn and we had to use the extra electric heater all night; still it wasn't really warm. The old radiator is very noisy, hissing all the time.
The room was located at the side/rear of the hotel, and there was a lot of noise outside all night. At 2 in the morning I woke up because people were screaming on the street, it sounded like they would kill each other. Very creepy because I suspect there's no-one at the hotel except for the guests. There is no front desk after all. So I didn't feel safe.
BTW the windows of our room were so dirty we could hardly look out.
There were lots of flies inside, getting on our nerves when we tried to sleep. One fly crashed onto my pillow, obviously dead. Disgusting. The guy who let us in said we could call him if we needed him to remove any insects, but how would he possibly do that with ceilings that high?
Breakfast was a tiny table full of UPFs with some fresh fruit. We had to take the food to our room because there is only one table and this was occupied by a bunch of chatting OAPs who had finished their meal but wouldn't leave to let others sit there.
I had been looking forward to our stay because I really like old buildings and this one certainly has its charms, but it is not suited as a hotel. We wouldn't stay there again.

Room was hard to heat, noisy and occupied by lots of very tedious flies.

LIGHT continental breakfast - same thing both days!   Apparently they keep serving small muffins and bagels until they are all eaten 😳

Very noisy room. Stayed in Mayors office.  Right on street. Street lights shine in room through cracks in curtain all night

Do not believe the rating!!!

Unique stay near Deadwood but away from the crowds and noise.   The building has an interesting history and is somewhat charming but a few small changes could make a big improvement.    The beds are comfy and the bed linens are lovely.    The towels are not of the same quality, they are small and scratchy.     The breakfast is very uninspiring.    Instant oatmeal (no milk), pre-packaged hard boiled eggs, store bought mini muffins and bagels.   The coffee is good, but real milk, cream or half and half would be much better than Coffee-Mate.   No ice available (but when I inquired the staff brought me some from their own freezer)-- so service was awesome.    Sue was very available at all hours and extremely anxious to make our stay enjoyable.   

Unique stay

We try to seek out and stay in historic hotel properties, and the Town Hall Inn in Lead, South Dakota (it really was the town hall back in the first half of the 20th century) certainly provided a unique and great stay!  We were upstairs in the Plat and Tract Office room, which featured high ceilings, a king sized bed, great shower, and air conditioning - a very comfortable room.  Owner Sue puts out a nice little continental breakfast in the morning, too.  Just watch out for the 32 stairs to the second floor!  There is not an elevator!

Historic Town Hall Building is Now a Hotel

Located in the Old Town Hall. We had a 2 night stay in the 'Mayor's Office', a King room on the ground floor. A large well equipped room with a comfortable bed. Access to the building and room is via key pad, which saves carrying round an extra key or card. We noted the numbers on our phones to avoid any late night issues (!) as there is no manned reception as such, albeit a contact phone number.

The only issue we had was noise as the complimentary breakfast area was in the lobby outside the room, which meant as guests came to the area for breakfast we could hear their conversations, laughter etc. We did feel that this 'downside' should have been made clearer or reflected in the price?

Lead itself was a bit of a bonus - we wished to visit Deadwood and were unable to book our preferred accommodation in Deadwood so opted for Lead itself. Whilst there we visited the Homestead Mine / Sanford University research centre and enjoyed a meal at the Sled Haus - a good 20 min+ walk but worth it.

Room tip - Get a room on an upper floor. Ground floor can be noisy.



Historic building - good stop.

Loved this small inn.  Directly across from the Open Cut on Main Street in Lead.  Visited in mid-winter and our two first floor rooms were cozy and spacious with very high ceilings and comfortable beds.  It really was the town hall and each room has its unique character.  In room microwave, fridge and (!) ice maker.  Breakfast options were on the minimalist side but the coffee was above average.  The histories of Lead and Deadwood are intertwined and we found it more interesting to "visit" Deadwood but stay in Lead.

Cozy, warm, friendly, historic and great location

Loved our stay here! We stayed in the Engineer's Room, which was very spacious. This was seriously, by far, the cleanest hotel we have ever stayed in. Ever. Everything was absolutely immaculate. Remember this is a hotel- not a b&b. However, the owner has gone out of her way to add very nice touches. There are small ice machines in the room, nice bath supplies, and heat lamps in the bathrooms. The breakfast spread was simple but perfect. Muffins, oatmeal, fruit, and more were offered. And her coffee was amazing! The only thing I would have liked was larger to-go coffee cups. We would stay here again in a heartbeat, and have already been recommending it to friends who are planning trips that way. Stay here, you will be happy you did!

Immaculate 

We stayed in the Auditor's room for one night and it was lovely.  The communication between the hotel and us regarding our arrival was great and the check in process very quick.  

Our room was spacious with a nicely equipped kitchette (which we didn't need to use), nice sitting area and bathroom.  It was very quiet even though we were on the ground floor on a side street side.  

We went downstairs to the Jailhouse Pub, had a beer and visited with the really friendly owner.  We learned a lot about the area and got some suggestions for dinner.

Deadwood is very close and there are lots of options to dine there, which we did.  In the morning, we had a nice continental breakfast right outside our door with fresh coffee, pastries, muffins, yogurt, toast and I believe bagels.  The coffee was plentiful and it was nice that we could just step out our door for a refill.  

All in all, we had a great stay and would return if going to that area again.

Very comfortable stay

Perhaps it was our misfortune to have visited during Kool Deadwood Nights, or maybe it's due to the inexperience of the new owners, but this was the most expensive and disappointing lodging of our 12 night trip through Colorado, Wyoming, and South Dakota. It would not take much to elevate the experience. For more than $300 a night, we expect more amenities. Upgrade the towels, provide a couple bottles of complimentary water, have ice available. Add a full length mirror,or just a second mirror anywhere in the room. Partner with a local bakery for a more appetizing continental breakfast. It's not a terrible place. It was very clean, and the new owner is very friendly. If the history of the building is higher priority than the amenities, this may please you.

Interesting but overpriced

The "bed and breakfast" was recommended by our daughter so we really wanted to enjoy it.  It is fine if you know what to expect and what you're getting.  The staff were great.  Very friendly and very helpful.  But this is not a bed and breakfast.  It is a quaint, remodeled building made into bedrooms.  We stayed in the "Mayor's Room".  I booked it because it was more square footage than other, like rooms.  It is on the street side of the building and it is VERY noisy.  Motor cycles, cars, trucks all driving right by the windows.  You're going to have trouble sleeping whenever traffic is going by.  Also, the only air conditioning is from a VERY noisy window air conditioner.  You can't sleep with that thing working.  They have a box fan in the room that helped to circulate air when the air conditioner was off during the night.  That worked but, at this price, is this what you want to have to do?  For those considering staying during fall/winter/spring, there is a plug in heater in addition to the radiator heat.  That's probably not a good sign.  I read one review that criticized the place for lack of breakfast, being a bed and breakfast.  Other reviews were effusive about the great accommodations so I ignored it.  But it was right.  There is no real breakfast in the bed and breakfast.  Only small pastries and green bananas.  The coffee was good.  But the only creamer was powder.  It's hard to believe that the owners couldn't see their way to buy a $2.00 box of half and half.  Throw it out after a week and buy another.  That's the kind of lack of detail that you need to be aware of.  The people at the pub in the basement told us that they just got new owners a couple of months ago.  They must not be experienced hoteliers, let alone knowing what a bed and breakfast is about.  It's just the lack of details that is striking.  Be aware of what you will get.  If that's OK, it's a fine place.  But this is not up to our experiences with other hotels, let alone bed and breakfasts.  It doesn't look like there is a lot of opportunity to upgrade the rooms.  At least not the Mayor's Room.  But there is a LOT of opportunity to do the small things that make you feel like they are paying attention to all the things sufficient to make you feel valued and enjoy your stay.
