Have stayed several times since it's been under new management.  Clean, comfy, with very fair rates.  Courtyard's nice for hanging out in the early morn with mtn views.  New owners are constantly improving it--each time we stay it's better.

Nice, clean & on the upswing

We were directed to this motel because the one we booked had issues and could not host us.  The room we were in was clean.  It is a no frills motel which matched the rate we paid so if I were in that area  again I would stay there again.  The area is quiet and we felt safe.  The front desk staff were pleasant and accommodating.

Quaint motel in New Mexico.

Welcoming, friendly staff, comfortable beds and pillows!!!, within walking distance of restaurants, cozy clean remodeled  rooms, pretty setting and landscaping. It was really just what we needed and when we first arrived we decided we needed to stay in a different room.  The owner was VERY kind and accommodating. Not even a sign of frustration and I know we caused her a little more work and concern for us to change rooms. I do recommend this hotel and we will stay there again if the opportunity arises. 

Comfortable; Friendly Accommodating owners

This motel served my needs very well. I just needed a quiet place to rest for one night and it checked the boxes. It’s not the fanciest place in the world, but the desk staff was friendly, the room was clean, and the area was very quiet. The wi-fi was pretty shaky, even for just checking email, so that’s maybe the only thing I would ding the experience for. Otherwise, a good value for the price.

Good night stay

Owners, Joe and Carol have added a touch of class to Magdalena. Stay in room 19 and you will experience a room with both a touch of Navajo color and Euro style !!!!! Their office is  home, but they have arrayed a number of artifacts from New Mexico that are both charming and historical. We completely enjoyed our stay. New Mexico rainstorm and all !!

Recently remodeled with a nice touch of class

I was so happy to land at the High Country Lodge after a longggggg drive from Taos.  John was very welcoming and was excited to show me to my newly remodeled room.  He and Carol took over the Lodge a year ago and have been lovingly upgrading and beautifying since!  I was so surprised by the small town charm of Magdalena. I was there less than 24 hours but feel like I became friends with half the town! The room was extremely clean, upgraded amenities and the bed felt like I was sleeping on a cloud. Thanks again I loved my stay!

Warm hospitality and A restful night sleep

Dis-regard the previous reviews on the HI Country Lodge- they're all over 4 years old! It is an older motel & somewhat dated, but the new owners are constantly at work up-dating the property... I just spent 3 weeks there (April 2022) while undertaking massive repairs to my cabin & my stay was great!
  John & Carol go out of their way to make sure everyone is comfortable & have what they need- if you're in need of quiet comfort I highly recommend this establishment!

Under New Management

Great place to stay for the price in town, spacious rooms and well kept. The hotel was actually packed full for the hunting season. Even though it was full the room was still quiet in the evenings.  Would love to see the restaurant open early enough to breakfast prehunt.

Great place to stay in town.

My son and I stayed here while hunting in the local area.  the room was dirty.  the bathroom shower was not clean. dirt and mold in the window sill.  I will not stay here again.  i will drive longer and stay in soccoro

High Country Lodge is one of the last hold outs in a desolate town. 
The innkeeper was gracious, having been on the job less than nine months, and directed us to a wonderful restaurant in Socorro, about a 30 minute drive east. But, we were inspired by the town's mission to resurrect this place and decided to take the risk on what was billed as a Route 66 experience.
There is no longer a restaurant at this property, which has a for sale sign on the office door. On a Sunday evening, there is no food in Magdalena, except for the Family Dollar store. One might say this town is a food desert. 
We were the only people lodging there, and with over 30 rooms, we were given the only "clean" room, because housekeeping had a family emergency. 
It was quite cold and windy, and the wall unit was not adequate, though it blew up a gale. 
Wi-fi, while free, was spotty and often dropped.
If hungry, cold, and tired, one might be better off driving another 30 minutes where the interstate provides a few more options.
