I’ve been staying with Robert and Marsha Skoglund for over 10 years. This summer 2019, I already have two dates booked in June and July. The mid coast is a Mecca of Maine arts and good. Humble’s place is a great stay before taking the boat out to Monhegan Island. 
We visit the Farnsworth, The Olson house, the Rockland galleries and like the book store/coffee shop on the main drag in Rockland.

The Humble Farmer takes me to the dump to dig around in their shop for treasures. We sometimes go to the Grange Supper if I’m there the right weekend. 
I am regaled with his encyclopedic knowledge of local history and his distinct view of the world. A linguist at heart  Robert gives discounts to guests who will speak with him solely in their native tongue providing a reverse language immersion program for him. While I know some German, Dutch and Spanish I am not fluent enough to do it.

I’ve visited alone, with my husband and two children, and brought girl friends other years. The last several years I’ve stayed solo and attended Salad Days at Watershed for the Ceramic Arts. When they were little, my kids loved the cows that graze in the back yard. We helped pick fruit some years and have enjoyed learning about Robert’s solar power system. 

Marsha always provides an extensive and filling full breakfast each morning with fresh coffee, fruit, pancakes or eggs and sausage or bacon. An avid game player she loves cribbage and we’ll play a rubber or two before bed. 

The main guest room is a large room on the first floor and has a double and a twin bed and a private bath with a shower. Everything is exceptionally clean and the loveseat and recliner make it very homey. A small fridge allows me to store leftovers or personal beverages. 

Upstairs the two guest rooms have a double bed and two twin beds respectively and a shared bath with a claw foot tub (no standard shower). The shower attachment on the tub allows one to easily rinse ones hair etc..  Blackout shades dating back to the war can be pulled to make the bedrooms rooms dark.

The beds are quite comfy and I love the percale sheets but sometimes there is traffic noise that is more noticeable in the front upstairs room. I definitely prefer the downstairs suite if given the choice. But I will stay in any of the rooms because it is not for them that so come. This is a place to stay for the charm and the food and for intelligent informed conversation. If cleanliness is next to godliness then Marsha should be put up for canonization. 

I have been made to feel a part of this family and love my annual Christmas letter. If you want more than a bed and breakfast this is it. If you want just a bed and breakfast you can find it here and you won’t be disappointed.

An annual pilgrimage

This was our first visit to The Humble Farmer Bed & Breakfast. Martha and Robert are lovely people. The place is clean and the breakfasts are delicious. I was visiting with some friends. However, we were disappointed with our accommodations.  We had to share a bedroom with one full sized bed and a mattress on the floor - for 3 people! We were supposed to get the larger bedroom, but, apparently, there was some confusion about our needs. We had a shared bathroom. Which was fine. However, it only had a claw tub with shower attachment - no shower stall. It would be difficult for an elderly person to get in and out of. Overall, we made the most of our visit.

This is the second time we've stayed at The Humble Farmer.  Martha and Robert are lovely.  She makes wonderful breakfast in the morning, and it's a joy staying with these Mainers.  Conversations are always stimulating with this couple and if you like art, then you will greatly enjoy their bed and breakfast and the stories they can share.  Accommodations are comfortable enough for us to go back and it's very clean.
