We wanted someplace quiet for a few nights upcountry.  The Banyan was perfect.  We loved our casita, appreciated the coffee machine and the delicious breakfast left for us each morning.   The pool is large with a great view to the ocean.  beautiful grounds.  A great place to kick back.  Helaina was a lovely host.

very peaceful place away from the hustle of the beaches in maui

Need a car rental to get to this b&b near Makawao (a small town with few stores/restaurants). A beautiful place to stay/retreat after daily excursions with a banyan tree, beautiful grounds and a very well kept/clean pool (didn't get to enjoy because we were out every day by 7am and back in evening). Did not get to enjoy breakfast either as it was held due to covid/pandemic. Nice couple who are newer owners. 

Bring toiletries because all that's provided is liquid soap. Do your own research for things to do, places to eat etc (guess I'm more used to Airbnb culture where hosts are very proactive/involved in providing recommendations). Be careful if arriving after dark, easy to miss driveway turn in.

Peaceful retreat

My boyfriend and I stayed 3 nights at this lovely upcountry B&B in early January.  It’s location is centrally located on the island but is definitely off the tourist track.  It’s quiet with no traffic noise, and the surroundings are lush, floral gardens.  The units are mostly separate cottages.  Ours was a duplex(?).  There’s a really nice looking pool but we didn’t use it.

We left the windows open in our room and the constant trade winds kept the place nice and cool.  This is an older property (my guess - it was built in the 1940’s?) but it is up-to-date with a modern decor, comfy bed, modern kitchenette, and modern bathroom (see comment on bathroom door below).  There’s TV and Wi-Fi if you need it, and plenty of outlets for charging your electronics.  

Breakfast was delivered to our room early in the morning.  The food was basic (consisted of yogurt, hard boiled eggs, fresh fruit, pastries).  It was just fine for me;  I especially liked the fresh fruit and fresh pastries (my boyfriend doesn’t eat eggs).

I really like this place and would definitely stay here again!!! 👍❤️

The only negatives:  
- As another reviewer noted, be sure to bring your own soap and shampoo.  The liquid soap and shower gel that were provided were watered down to the point where we weren’t clean after showering.  Thankfully, there’s a grocery store nearby.
- More than one towel per person would’ve been nice.  I didn’t ask anyone for more, but I shouldn’t have to ask.
- Finally, the bathroom door did not properly latch when it’s closed and the constant trade-wind breezes caused the door to open & noisily slam shut (annoying when you’re trying to be quiet when you get up to use the toilet in the middle of the night).

Lovely upcountry stay

On the one hand, the positive side is the overall structure: a typical historic house of the Hawaiian plantations (which has known better times) located in a beautiful garden overlooking the valley and which has been divided into various rooms/apartments. On the other hand, that the owners, when (rarely) you can meet them, are very kind and that Makawao is a small and pretty town with excellent restaurants, first of all the Casanova Italian Restaurant and Deli. Unfortunately, the images that are provided by the owner are a little misleading because in fact it was our honeymoon room of the Hawaiian apartment.

It's not worth the price you pay.

This was our first hotel on Maui after arrival - it’s extremely convenient to the airport as well as Haleakala volcano, so I highly recommend it as a first stop on Maui. It is also relatively close to the Northern coast surfing beach (where we watched surfers and seals), plus, if you plan on going to Hana, you can check off a couple of the closer waterfalls the day before getting on the road in earnest.

When we arrived it was pretty dark and there was nobody manning the reception. The photos showed a yoga room, but I guess we were not there long enough to find it. Since you don't get to speak to anyone at check-in, the place could benefit from better signage and more elaborate instructions. 

The microclimate is a bit cooler here, so it was too cold in December to use the pool, but we did avail ourselves of the hot tub. Do bring your own toiletries, as those are minimal. The breakfast that is left outside your room every morning is amazing - nothing to complain about there. The rooms are not exactly luxury, but there is a kitchenette, so in general, I was happy with our stay.

Convenient and centrally located

At over $200 a night for 3 nights this bed and breakfast is massively overpriced for what you get.

On many of the booking websites the "suites" advertised are misleading. Only some of them have a full kitchen, but the pictures used show those with the full kitchen complete with oven, hob etc. In reality, the majority of rooms only have a coffee maker (no kettle for boiling water), microwave and sink. Thankfully we checked in before going shopping so wern't left with food we'd be unable to cook! The microwave in our room was broken, but did get replaced when we finally managed to inform someone about it (that's a different point).

The room was very warm. There was no air conditioning and the celing fan was so wobbly we were worried to turn it to high speed due to fear of it dropping on us in the night. We had to open the windows, but the insect screens wern't properly secured down and flapped up in the wind. I awoke with itchy insect bits every morning. The floor was really gritty on our arrival and I doubt it had been properly cleaned.

The bathroom was sold with a bath, but as the plug was broken (see photo) it was impossible to have one. The bath towels were damp and smelt mouldy and the hand soap/shower gel was clearly watered down. As there was never anyone about it was impossible to get fresh towels. 

The pool outside wasn't inviting at all. It had equipment left in it and was dirty (see photo). The advertised hot tub was sealed off and not usable at all.

The room lacked security. There was an external glass door into the bathroom, that only had a turn lock on. The room was advertised with a safety deposit box but there wasn't one. This was possibly in reception, but as no one was ever there even if we had been able to leave stuff we would of had to hang around to get things back when we wanted to leave.

Breakfast was mediocre. Served each morning in a tuppleware by 7am, this consisted of eggs, fruit, usually juice (one day this was yoghurt instead), and one carb item each. We were both hungry by 9am as this wasn't a substantial brekfast at all. For the cost we expected more than a light breakfast. 

As already hinted, was that no one was ever there to speak to and get issues resolved. They do leave contact numbers in the window, which is all well and good for US residents with their US mobile contracts, but for international travelers it's more difficult to call US numbers without significant cost, which after already paying over $200 a night isn't something we were keen to add on top. There's no phone in the room to call the owners for free. 

Overall, I feel $50 a night should be knocked off for lack of inviting pool and hot tub,  $15 a night for such a medicore breakfast and $20 a night for lack of advertised amenities. There is also a cleaning fee added to the bill of $60, even though  cleaning is only completed at the end of your stay and you're encouraged to take out your own rubbish and do your own washing up. It should be a given that the room is going to be cleaned for the next person. With the $20 a night extra knocked off each night, I feel $100 a night would be much more reasonable in the accomodations current state. 

If you're being asked to pay anymore than that then don't bother. You can get someone much nicer for that amount of money.

Massively overpriced

Last June was the second time we have used this refurbished pineapple plantation house for our Sierra Club hiking group. You won't find a more charming place on Maui, nor with one with more character. Marty is a great host and owner who responds promptly to your most whimsical needs. We rented the main house plus several cottages and suites. There is professional kitchen, saltwater pool and spa, and a yoga studio. My groups love this place and Marty so we hope to return.

Our Return Visit Was Pono!

Stayed for 3 nights but will stay longer next time!  Comfortable, clean, and beautiful setting.  Upcountry gem!  Loved the pool, gardens, birds, and breakfast delivery.  Stayed in Gardenia and enjoyed the patio and hammock.  Proprietor Marty and staff were warm and helpful.  Makawao fit our food and shopping needs perfectly.  Was truly a paradise landing for our first days ever in Maui.  Mahalo !

VIntage Maui !

On the upside, the location was good for day trips and the breakfast was good.The kitchenette was nice with a coffee maker and coffee in the mini-fridge. 
Now for the downside...
1. No one was around when we arrived but the cottage was open so we went in. There was a faded phone number on the window of the "office" to call.
2. There was NO information in the room about amenities - probably because there are so few.  No instructions on what the remote was for (later we found out it was for a skylight) and no information about the surrounding area.  A folder with some restaurant suggestions,drugstore location, area attractions, and some information about breakfast, check-out, etc. would have been appreciated.
3.  There were 2 bath towels and 2 washcloths for 2 people for 3 days.  They were never replaced and there was no way they would dry out in the rainforest climate.  A towel dryer/warmer rack would have helped.  I don't need a new towel every day (a washcloth, yes) but I hate trying to dry off with a soggy towel.
4. The bedroom was hot with no cross-ventilation. It was too risky to open the skylight because of intermittent rain.  It did cool down significantly by early morning giving everything a damp chill (including my one and only towel)..
5. The bed in the front room was strange.  It would have been better to have the small sofa and coffee table in the front room as we were told we were NOT ALLOWED to use the common room of the property..  I thought that B&Bs were all about sharing common space?
6. BRING YOUR OWN SHAMPOO, SOAP, & CONDITIONER!  We had to make a late run to the drugstore to get toiletries because the only thing you will get is a pump bottle of watery almond-smelling soap.

I have only stayed in a B&B once before so I didn't know what to expect.  I certainly did not expect this marginal level of service and if this is what one gets with a B&B, count me out.

You can do better than this.

Several well-equipped studios in a beautiful garden. Very nice swimming pool, jacuzzi available. Very charming home. Good price ratio. Quiet and strategic place to visit the island of Maui.
