Our stay at this hotel was cozy, quaint & perfect. Rooms 11 & 13 had comfy beds and balcony access through the windows. So charming! Each room was so unique & I loved the old cast iron bathtub for a hot soak after a busy weekend! I want to go back & stay in #2 and try the Walloon and restaurant. The town was so quiet Monday morning, so I wandered next store to Moke-A-Java for a coffee, danish and some taffy and nuts to go. Truly an awesome old timey experience!

California history and a good night’s sleep… a nice change from the fast paced day to day we are all too accustomed to.

Having been in the restaurant industry and having friends who own restaurants, it pains me to write negative reviews because things are especially tough right now and I like to think folks are doing the best they can. But our experience dining at the saloon was so unacceptable I had to say something. My husband and I were celebrating our 12th anniversary this weekend and thought we'd try a new place so we could have someplace more local to recommend to family staying with us ( we live in San Andreas). I thought the reviews looked good and was excited to try the seafood Benedict with crab and lobster cakes. The service was underwhelming (it was clear the lady running it was entirely bored with her job). My husband ordered his basic breakfast. Nothing particularly bad but his hash browns were barely cooked and luke warm, and the toast was barely toasted. Regardless it would have been fine if mine hadn't been a disaster. All that was needed was for the chef to say "hey we're out of that, do you want something different" but instead I got two bare toasted English muffins with two small pieces of what looked like last night's salmon, and some small chunks of shrimp. No eggs. The fact that the server allowed that out of the kitchen is also embarrassing. I asked her for a different Benedict. My partner was almost finished with his meal when the replacement came out. I couldn't believe that the chef had actually reused the English muffins (so the meal just reeked of salmon) and didn't replace the hollandaise sauce that I'd had on the side (cold and congealed). I asked for fresh sauce and what was brought out was chunky, separated and looked like the chef was irritated and just dumped mine into a new bowl. There was no recovering after that. We decided to leave. At that point my husband was so irritated he literally wanted to leave without paying but I told him I'd cover it. I'm actually stunned that the server had the nerve to charge us full price for what she even acknowledged was an unacceptable meal. We probably should have asked to speak to a manger but when the service is that bad you usually have to assume the management isn't going to care. My advice? Go to Frank's Cafe...

Our Airbnb cancelled on us at the last minute due to Covid so we had to quickly find alternative lodgings. We got the Courtyard Suite for two nights (Sat & Sun) at a reasonable price. This is the little apartment in the basement of the building overlooking the yard in the back. There’s a kitchen but don’t plan to cook there because there’s no supplies or a stove. We brought a little coffee maker with us, easy breakfast foods, plastic ware, and paper ware.  There’s a full size fridge and a table. The living room and bedroom were comfortable and clean. You just have to remember that this is a super old building so there’s oddities and many things just can’t be up to luxury standards.  The bedroom is just under the bar/restaurant so it was pretty loud on Saturday night but quiet Sunday night. The worst thing was the lingering smell of fried fish that came from the restaurant kitchen above.  It was just always there when we stepped back into the apartment. 
The restaurant had amazing food so make sure you have dinner there one night. 
We toured the upstairs hotel rooms and they are historic, creaky, and the walls are thin. The basement suite is a much better choice.

What a really great, historic Gold Country hotel!  We live in Gold Country ourselves and like to travel around to other historic towns for sightseeing, Sierra Foothill wineries, and ghost hunting!  We intentionally booked Room 7, which is allegedly one of the most haunted rooms in the Hotel (haunted by George himself!) however we unfortunately didn't experience any ghostly experiences.  The owners and staff are very, very pleasant people and the breakfast we had was very good and EXTREMELY cheap!  We sat out on the back deck to eat and was a great place to have a meal.  Will definitely be staying there again when in the area and needing overnight accommodations!

A group of us friends enjoy staying at historic hotels, ideally ones with haunted histories.  This historic hotel was perfect from the amazingly friendly staff, the excellent food, and the antique furniture and furnishings.  The hotel has many different ghostly stories and our group experienced some unexplained activities during the night.  We were very happy with our stay and will definitely return in the near future.

A favorite when we visit our new little cottage in this historic town is the dining room at the Hotel Leger.  That kitchen is putting out some great favorites these days and my most recent was the ravioli, served with three different sauces.  How fun is that, to try you pasta with a different sauce in every bite.  The wine list features some great local favorites as well as a nice international selection.  The restricted dining makes for a more intimate experience... and that’s fine for me, although it’s not doing the Hotel owners any favors.  The staff is attentive and knowledgeable about the dishes and the pricing is half of what similar fare would be in the Bay Area.  Excellent value, I would say ;-)

Stayed one night and enjoyed great hospitality from the hotel hostess.  Debra was very kind and willing.  We dined poolside and our server Richie was great.  The food was EXCELLENT.  How about some Lobster Crabcakes! Yum!  Great old backyard style pool and gardens.  Want to return again soon.

Old west charmer , gonna have my wedding here someday!  I have stayed in 8 of the thirteen rooms and always leave feeling refreshed. Best steak salad and bleu cheese I’ve ever had. Very accommodating 🥰 only place with live music for miles

DO NOT EAT THERE !  The worst experience I have ever had for dinner.  Bartender was only interested in his friends, only 1 waitress, took forever to get our food. NO MENU !  They offered either fish or chicken !  I got chicken, and it was terrible.  Nasty flavor, and tough and dry.  Never again.  If I could give it zero stars I would

Stayed in room number 5 which featured water damage and mold on on the ceiling and wall, 1/2" gaps in between the flaking painted floorboards, walls covered in plaster substrate (aka half finished plaster) and a Goodwill chic full size bed! The dirt caked area rug makes you want to wear your shoes to bed and the window covering barely covers the window--which gives one an uneasy feeling being that all of the windows are accessible on the balcony to any drunken voyeur. From the $115 + tax for the room (I've stayed in better at $30 a night), the $35 dog fee (which is mentioned NOWHERE) and after being passive aggressively scolded by one of the owners for not calling to book the room due to the pet fee (ahem--we wouldn't have found this place without the internet) and one of the worst dinners of our lives, we were out $200! The same owner gave us a bizarre game of Scrabble, which came complete with a dead cockroach and there is no TV, the internet was down all night and morning, so you basically just have to pray to fall asleep so you can wake-up and get the hell out. The food was pretty dang gross; the veggie burger was topped with two frozen veggie patties, the Bloody Mary over-seasoned with horseradish--why, just why?! The "continental breakfast" is comprised of plastic wrapped danishes, watered down coffee and some juice. As others have mentioned it is super loud on live music nights and even though we heard the saddest and loudest cover of "Blue Bayou", we could have dealt with this if we didn't have so many issues with our accommodation. Overall, I'd rate our experience as amazing--amazingly terrible! Room #5 should be repaired before it is allowed to be rented, as it is a total mess (I live out of our truck for a large part of the summer--I'm not hard to please).  

The most infuriating part is that this is a historical landmark and it might as well be designated as being in a "state of arrested decay" as the owners clearly have no interest in preserving what could be a historical marvel. Instead it is treated like a cash cow; the balconies (which are accessible only by climbing out the windows) is clad entirely in unfinished plywood on the south end of the building. The restaurant roof at the rear is clearly disintegrating, as the insulation foam is totally exposed. The carpet in the hallway of the 2nd story is stained and is coming up so badly in parts that it is a legitimate tripping hazard. The wood floors are painted brown in most of the rooms, bowing and have severe gaps (up to 1/2" in some areas). This place sincerely deserves more respect and being that I have a BS in architecture, I laid awake most of the night dreaming about winning the lottery, buying the current owners out and restoring it lovingly. Sigh, if only!

About the town: my husband are in our 30's and we're natural looking folks with long hair; if you're of the same persuasion be prepared to experience that welcoming "Easy Rider" vibe in this little town. Mokelumne Hill is a perfect example of a town that wants your money, but not YOU. No doubt this is a red town (definitely saw "State of Jefferson" propaganda), so let that be a proverbial warning shot to all "gentle folk". 

Basically, don't let their well-branded website fool you! We recommend: Sutter Creek, Arnold, or Murphy's as their establishments cost about the same, the people were pleasant and you get a truly historical experience.
