No hotel, motel, bed and breakfast, campsite, or cave that we've ever stayed in has had more issues than the Catskill Bed & Breakfast Spa. What a disaster, and it's all man-made by the owner Lewis Harrison. Lewis is quite a character and a legend in his own mind.  He is certainly not politically correct and during one of many talks with him, he became outright offensive. Shame on you Lewis for making my wife cry. I'll bet you didn't even pay attention to what you did since you were too busy talking and talking. He says that he is LGBTQ friendly and he is all but that. His aggression and attitude is palpable. Besides being unfriendly, in a passive aggressive manner, the room we were given wreaked of body odor and stale air. The shelter we built for our Beagle is cleaner and more inviting.  Leaving was our biggest pleasure of the weekend.

Unkind, unfriendly and uninhabitable.

We usually try to stay at chain hotels or motels, But we were visiting some friends in Roxbury, NY and this was the closest place we could find that had rooms available on Columbus Day weekend. We also usually check the reviews on yelp. We didn’t do that. THIS PLACE IS A HORROR SHOW.  Words do not adequately describe what we experienced and saw, but I will try so that you can avoid this place like the plague. 

 We were greeted by the innkeeper, a guy named Lewis, as we drove onto the property. From the moment we met him we felt completely and totally creeped out. He looked disheveled and kind of “asylumish”. This man does not shut up. He talks incessantly about himself. He takes every opportunity to engage you in conversation with no respect for your privacy. One would expect that when going to a bed-and-breakfast the proprietors would simply introduce themselves, explain the amenities that they offer, and disappear. This is something Lewis does not understand. Instead, he seems to pop up mysteriously wherever you are and starts conversations that center around him. 

The place smells like a funeral home when you first enter. Everything is outdated and run down. There are antiques throughout but when you enter your room, all of the lovely antiques are conspicuously absent. 

 There is dirt, dust, and cobwebs everywhere. There is no heating in the rooms. We were given a single small space heater which was not adequate at all. The bed smells as though a homeless person slept in it for days. The bathroom had no towels, no soap, a half roll of toilet paper, and the wastepaper basket was lined with a supermarket shopping bag. Wallpaper was peeling off the ceiling the walls were dirty, and the sink was filthy. The bathtub was equally as dirty, and had some kind of rubber mat in it which was obviously moldy. 

Many of the light fixtures were missing bulbs.  Ceiling, walls in the bedroom were cracked, and dirty.  I understand that this is and old house, but there has been no attempt to keep this place up. It is literally falling apart.  

I spent the better part of an hour searching the room for peep holes or hidden cameras as we felt completely unsafe and unsecure. I guess that’s in part due to the pervy and skeevy personality of Lewis. 

We both slept in our clothes rather than sleep under the bed sheets.  Can you imagine that?  

We left at first light to avoid Lewis and his offer of breakfast. Why you may ask. Well the place is filthy. I can only imagine what the kitchen looks like (shudder). 

I suggest that you pass this rats nest disguised as a B&B and sleep in the parking lot of the Stewart’s down the block.  The bathroom is spotless there, and you can always get a cold or hot beverage from a clean environment. 

I’ve posted some photos to document the room conditions I’ve described. Lewis can try and refute my review but photographs never lie.  

I will be following up with the town of Stamford, and the State Dept.  of Health as this place needs to be shut down.

Filthy, Creepy, Horrible Experience

I recommend catskills b&b at 156 w main street in stamford new york -next to catskills ski resort and an hour away from the baseball hall of fame in cooperstown new york -the family went above and beyond to make me feel welcome -sit on there huge porch and enjoy a cup of coffee in the cool mountain and country air -they have a spa hot tub you can enjoy while skiing in the catskills -i will return

This place has far more in common with a hostel than anything that is generally understood to qualify as a bed and breakfast, let alone spa. None of the rooms have actual locks on them, meaning that there is no way to secure personal belongings if you would like to leave the property for dinner or recreation. What can be utilized, and only while inside the room, is a hook and eye style latch on a flimsy door that any determined toddler could overpower if so inclined. The bed in our room may have, at one time, been comfortable before years of overuse rendered the experience of sleeping in it to something closer to a night's rest in a sagging hammock. The bathroom, which was billed as a "spa," is quite large, if not outdated by about 40 years, and would be a perk if not for the fact that once inside it it is impossible not to be overwhelmed by the smell of stale water that has been allowed to eat away at the similarly neglected walls. The innkeeper is not any way interested in providing the service or experience usually reserved for staying at a bed and breakfast and instead treats guests as trapped audiences  for the purpose of self-aggrandizing himself as the "genius intellect" and "visionary thinker" all conversations are contrived to convince guests that he is. The innkeeper's preference for proselytizing a preferred ideology over providing a service is further evidenced by the absence of any modern conveniences, such as air conditioning, wifi, television, or even windows that remain open. Even the charge for the room is billed as "energy healing" to further reinforce his delusion that he is not responsible for providing a service so much as he is being paid to be spiritual guru or philosopher. Whether the ideas and self-published books on which he grounds his claims are of merit is outside the scope of this review; Even if he is every bit the genius he claims to be, it does not change that he runs the poorest excuse for a bed and breakfast I have ever encountered precisely because his guests' comfort is of no concern to him and factors into literally zero aspect of how the place is run or kept. 

On the plus side, the combination of disrepair and uncleanliness so thoroughly diminished my appetite by the time the overcooked and ill-prepared food was presented that I ate too little of it to be at risk for the food poisoning I'm sure would have otherwise followed.

Worst B&B experience. Creepy and Unclean

I said a great visit, because it is more than a stay. Yes we met the owner and had a great chat over coffee the next day. If you want to stay at a hotel you merely stay there, if you overnight in a person's home you visit with them. The home and room was nice and well situated for the plans we had in the area, so it served our purpose. But we left with a more robust experience than we expected, and since we both enjoy good conversation that can run fast and wide, it was very a entertaining chat. Chances are he will know something, or someone, of interest to you...and if you really want to go on a fun mental toboggan ride ask him what interests him!
