Needed a place to stay in Richmond for a friend's wedding as the hotel the couple booked was too far out of my price range, and to my surprise I found a hostel right in downtown Richmond! I had a 6 person female room booked and I very much enjoyed my two night stay. The room had lockers and was super clean! I had no issues with the sleep. Bathrooms are shared with the floor, but they're all single bathrooms complete with toilet and shower so they were super private. Some people didn't know how to clean up after themselves (left toothpaste on the sink, etc), but that's not the hostel's fault. Bathrooms were still very clean. There was a breakfast provided free of charge. The only possible negative is there is no elevator. Fine for me, but might not be for other people. Highly recommend for a budget stay in Richmond!

Amazing hostel in the heart of Richmond

Had a great stay in a family room with daughter and great grandson. They live nearby and I live in Florida. We both enjoy downtown Richmond and often stay in town for a few days when I’m visiting. We enjoyed the location and spaciousness of the room for him to entertain himself with his legos, My daughter and I have stayed in hostels in many countries and this was his first visit at age 7. It was the perfect place to introduce a young person to hostel traveling and a perfect place to stay when visiting Richmond.

Excellent Visit

I booked a Bed in a female room. 

Positive: 

The hostel is an amazing place, very friendly and clean. The person at the reception is very kind and available to give recommendations about nearby places. The facilities are kind of new, I really liked the dining room: you can take your food and cook. The breakfast is good as well as the location.

I booked a bed in a female dorm, the rooms are dark, ideal to rest, the bed is very comfortable. The bathrooms are super clean and enough place to dress. I loved the place in general.

Negative: 

The quality of the rest is very bad. People come in and out of the room all night, with suitcases, lighting lights, without care. I had a very bad night and for that reason I will not stay in the place again, maybe in a single room. 

Else, what I did not like , even though I arrived early at 6pm, they assigned me a bunk right at the entrance to the room, even though there were 4 bed vacant more towards the end of the room. Two people arrived after midnight with suitcases and a lot of noise, they would have put them in the entrance beds. So unfair and lack of common sense. I consider the price paid was too high for this quality.

Great place but I would not stay there again. Not ideal for a good sleep (dorms).

Enjoyed 3 nights here.  The staff here ( including the numerous volunteers) make sure there are lots of activities ( free meals, drinks nights, international cooking) and are very inclusive.  Lovely hostel - facilities including own dorm bed lights and charging facilities, clean and in a good location downtown. Richmond was a pretty town - quiet in the winter months but would happily stay here again in the nicer weather.

Nice hostel - friendly staff and activities

For the first time in my life I decided to stay in a hostel. What can I say? This place has nothing to envy to a hotel. Great position, and great place in which you can meet a lot of people coming from everywere. Great staff but the best is Josh, the first frindly face I met in Richmond.

Great place... Amazing staff

This hostel is one of the best hostels I have stayed at in USA. The hostel is in downtown Richmond and only opened a few years ago. The room I stayed was very clean and comfortable and there is free and paid parking nearby if you have a car.
The hostel is in a good location downtown since it within walking distance to attractions in Richmond (the City Hall observation deck and state capitol building have free admittance). The complimentary breakfast and coffee in the morning was good (and there is a nice kitchen area to cook in as well), towels and shampoo are available, there is pool table downstairs and the wi-fi was fast and reliable. A great place to stay for budget travelers.

Excellent hostel and outstanding value

You've got a lot of choice at Hi Richmond, a large and friendly hostel perched in a trendy part of town on N 2nd Street, just round the corner from dozens of restaurants and bars.
You can stay in a dorm for very little, or push the boat out a bit and spend $100 on a private en suite room.
We did the latter, and enjoyed our stay.
The ceiling must have been 15ft high - you gaze up into space. The rooms are clean (this is an old elevator office, though ironically there isn't a working elevator and you have to use the stairs, which can be a haul if you have a lot of luggage), but the sight of black buckets everywhere to catch the drips when it rains makes you realise that there is a lot of work and expense needed to maintain this old building.
At one time it was even a low-security women's prison, so it's gone through a lot of incarnations.
There's a pool table, a communal kitchen in which people make meals, sitting areas to chat and interact, or do jigsaw puzzles, and a convivial, supportive and hostelly atmosphere.
The breakfast is basic, help yourself and wash up your own dishes after.
You can also get your laundry done.
The routine on the morning you check out is to bring your sheets and pillow cases downstairs with you, to be cleaned.
This is a kind-of muck-in sort of place, and none the worse for it.
