This hotel is in a good location and I have wanted to know this place for a long time. and one weekend we decided to go with my husband. he made it a very fun place for us. we enjoy the fireworks that are made at night. the place is very quiet, and the hotel rooms are in good condition.

 Holidays

I went on a mid week trip with my pup to check on the Elephant Seals and get some work done. Upon arrival the Front Desk Lady "Maria" was real rude. Secondly, the room itself was absolutely disgusting. I should have just stayed at the Motel 6 across the street. It would have been cheaper and probably cleaner with attentive staff. I won't bore anyone with the long details but there was a giant piece of bone in my 20$ burger, hair and stains and rips allllllll over the sheets. Janky doors with faulty locking mechanisms...I will go on....the shower was built for a sea squirrel- so tiny I could barely shave....loud people all night, rips in the window screen-a super creepy fire alarm on the wall. TO TOP IT OFF a man bringing me a sheet and a blanket let himself into my room after, and  I quote,  "Knocked and nobody answered so I let myself in." DO NOT STAY HERE.

HOLY HELL

The location is great, but the beds are the worst! I woke up every hour to walk or move. Never go there. My back hurts so much. And it is very noisy. The view is amazing and the bathroom also. But thats it.

Beds are terrible

This resort is a gem on the central coast of California. The two queen room we had was a bit dated, but the beds were comfortable, we had plenty of space for our family, and we even had a sliver of a view of the ocean from our window. The expansive oceanfront lawn with fireplaces and games was wonderful and the small yet nice pool was also appreciated. We would definitely stay here again.

Oceanfront Budget Hotel

Conveniently located just a couple of minutes drive from Hearst Castle and an elephant seal viewing point, Sands by the Sea is a perfect stop along Pacific Coast Highway 1 between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The hotel room was clean and spacious, and the hotel itself is located right next to the ocean - perfect for a morning walk. Reasonably priced. Breakfast vouchers for toast and coffee were provided.

Spacious room, nice location

Very good oceanfront hotel, large, clean rooms. We loved the brazeros lit up at night to enjoy the ocean, the view and the jacuzzi. Light lunch included but deserving of existence. Excellent price ratio.

It's a very nice surprise.

My wife and I enjoyed our stay here.  Many things were good and charming.   Only a few things were quirky or wonky.  Gather round if you would hear our tale.

First, the title of my review refers to the fact that Sands by the Sea is the older section of the Cavalier next door.  Same management, same amenities, same scenic seaside location, same restaurant, same front desk. Just cheaper, older, and ever so slightly less convenient.

The motel style room that we got was ok.  Comfortable, ok cleanliness, and well appointed with the standard amenities.  TV, refrigerator, coffee maker, bathtub, etc.  The furniture was scratched and worn.  The beds were comfy.

We found the room a bit noisy, from neighbours upstairs and next door, and the traffic from Highway 1.  It seemed to be a popular biker stop.  Also, for the first 24 hours, we did not have WIFI although I reported the outage 3 times.  We ended up walking over to Cavalier for WIFI access.  There is a guest laundry but we found it a bit treacherous to access (since the most direct path past the indoor pool was closed).  There was an ice machine, but it was not functional.  Also, when we arrived, the front office for Sands by the Sea was closed, with a sign re-directing us to the Cavalier office next door. 

The property is spacious and beautiful!  I can see why guests return here.  It literally sits at the edge of the coast, and a park like area make it a resort.  Firepits are lit at night.  There are sports courts and playgrounds.  Whimsical giant chess and checkers.  Lounge chairs.  Big seabirds constantly circle overhead.  There are two nice swimming pools!  The Cavalier coffee shop serves good food with good service.  

I think the location is perfect for access to local attractions while still providing an isolated resort like atmosphere.  We felt that we got a decent bargain because we essentially got everything  Cavalier guests got at a lower price.

General condition of the room limit, housekeeping leftover, dirty window, hair in clean towels, no sea view possible, indoor swimming pool closed, HS ice cream machine, and cherry on the cake, breakfast not included, they just give you a voucher worth $5 to deduct from the final $40 bill!!!

A scandal

The check in staff were accommodating and the room was clean. It is on the beach with chairs and firepits and a giant checker and chess game. It is (I guess) the sister hotel of the Cavalier hotel and that is where the breakfast is. The breakfast was toast a banana and coffee or $5.00 off a full breakfast - which was a nice option.

Great Hotel on the Beach

When checking in, the sign had to be signed indicating that the building contained materials that were, among other things, carcinogenic and could lead to birth defects, a corresponding sign was also found in the bathroom. When asked about the substances involved, a pre-printed information flyer was handed over to a California law, saying that it was mainly about the fireplace in the rooms and on the premises and that it was merely a compulsory declaration under the law.
