Hubs and I were traveling on our motorcycles and decided to stop for the night.  We usually tend to stay away from chain motels, but we are budget conscious and the Red Roof Inn at $79 a night was right within our price range.

Let me say that it is obvious that the interior of this place has been recently remodeled and that is a positive thing -  but the sad news is that the owners, housekeeping staff and groundskeepers are not maintaining the updates and improvements.

We were in room 114 - a king room near the "L" at the back corner of the motel.  As soon as we opened the door we were met with the stench of stale smoke.  This was in a non-smoking room.  We were even told by the nice young man who checked us in that we were given a "no pet, no smoking room".  Not true.  

You can tell that the room was updated a year or so ago because the bedspread, flooring, mirror and shower curtain are newer in style.  The A/C cools well though it is a bit noisy.  The water is hot and the water pressure is good,  though the re-surfaced tub coating is peeling off and the silicone grout is a bit moldy.  The floors are vinyl plank which is a vast upgrade from any type of carpet.  The color scheme is new.

The room, however, isn't as clean as it could be.  Not horrible - but lacking.  I moved the nightstand because it was about 3 feet away from the bed when I arrived.  The floor under the night table's original location was filthy - with food droppings, dust and debris.  I cleaned it up myself and was shocked at the amount of dirt that came up from the floor.  The bedspread was spotted, but the sheets and pillow cases were clean.

The toiletries are minimal and the bars of soap are the size of a quarter, though the towels are clean.  The bed is comfortable and there are 4 pillows.  I had to tighten the toilet seat because it was literally falling off the toilet.  The shower curtain is newer and colorful.

As you can see, the room itself is a mixed bag.  I can live with that.  The problem is the exterior of the building and the parking lot.  The building is a mess.  There is trash, debris, discarded styrofoam, cardboard, cigarette butts, beer bottle and soda bottle caps everywhere on the walkways in front of the rooms and throughout the parking lot.  It looks like no one every sweeps or polices the parking lot ever.  There are some rooms that are literally blocked by the debris that has blown in front of the doors to the rooms!  Very off - putting.

The clerk was efficient, chatty and helpful.  He was such a bright spot!   We had high hopes that the accommodations would be the same.

One thing that kind of worried me was that the front window does not open and there is no window in the bathroom...I like to open up and air out my motel rooms when I arrive and I was unable to do that.

As far as amenities - there is a large flat screen TV, a microwave and small fridge, which came in handy for our evening meal.  Internet is quick and there is a desk & chair in the room with ample lighting.  The motel is not serving breakfast "due to Covid" and they are not providing "brown bag" grab and go type of breakfasts like some other places.  Not a big deal for us.

There is an ice machine in the laundry room.  My hubs went and got the ice for us and he mentioned that it was a good thing that I didn't see the condition of the room... 

There are a bunch of motels nearby.  Do your homework before you book this one, unless your budget is first and foremost.

Sad, sad, Socorro, NM

I get to Socorro about once a year and tend to be active during the day, so I want a quiet, clean comfy space at a reasonable rate. The Red Roof in has been remodeling and upgrading their rooms consistently for a while. I stayed in a newly done room a couple doors from the office this past weekend and had a really comfortable bed in a very clean and well done room with nice flooring, bathroom, fridge and lot's of space. I have dealt with one of the owners in the past and he and his family really seem to care about their hotel and are in the process of upgrading all of the rooms. Prices are extremely reasonable and I will stay there again. Obviously this is not the Ritz, but if you are looking for a nice clean room and a comfy bed to recharge your batteries for the night, I highly recommend giving the hotel a look and check out their nice rooms!  I left early in the morning and returned late afternoon, so I am not sure if they are serving breakfast, due to covid. There is a nice restaurant a few doors away for breakfast or some fast food chains just a few blocks the other way. Microwave and Fridges in rooms are convenient as well. I suspect the reviews here are based on stays prior to the remodeling.

Remodeled Room, Clean and Comfy at Very Reasonable Rate

Worst motel I've ever had to stay at.

This place if filthy - when I say filthy; I mean you wouldn't let your worst enemy stay here, you'd be better off sleeping in a vehicle. This place should be condemned.  Ice machine looks like it might have mold - I bought ice at Walmart which is nearby because I was astonished at the lack of cleanliness.

FWIW, Ever since I've stayed here, in Oct 2019, I've had a mysterious illness physicians cannot figure out.

Don't stay here... I'm pretty sure I got sick from staying here.

for the $63 charged you will be much much better off at the Super 8 or Econo Lodge.  The carpet was dirty; there is mold in the caulk in the bathroom; the caulk repairs look like they were done by a 10 year old; the drywall repaired areas paint didn't match; the fridge wasn't cold; the overhead light bulb was burned out; the grounds look horrible--totally unkept with garbage, broken glass, weeds.  One room had the lock broken out of it; windows were dirty, safety lock on my room would not latch.  I can't say enough bad about this hotel.  i went into the breakfast area at about 8 am.  the counters were dirty, the plastic utensils were of the cheapest sort you can buy; there was no hot water for tea; there were 2 sad looking hard boiled eggs; the muffins looked horrible and there was no selection.  Most hotels have yogurt--not here.  Most hotels have toast, bread and butter and jam--not here. Most hotels have bananas and apples--not here.  It did have a waffle maker and cereal and the small sad muffins that looked picked over.   i stay in cheaper hotels, but this was awful.

This place should be torn down

My biggest pet peeve at hotels are squeaky bathroom doors. Why not oil those doors?Dirty walls, holes in walls, paint peeling and last but not least roaches. This hotel had it all. Wish I had not been so tired and ready to get to the first place I saw.  My first hint should have been the person checking us in. He had dried jam on his arms so that should have alerted me to the cleanliness of the place. Breakfast was a joke, cold tasteless coffee, one slice of old bread, one old mini bagel, who knows how old the cereal was.  DO NOT recommend this place.

Short NM trip

This place should be closed. Pitiful upkeep. Ice machine has been out of order for over 2 years according to the clerk. Manager damn near begs you to come to his continental breakfast. I showed up and took a cup of coffee. The hard boiled eggs & toast were not what I had in mind. He must have bought this place at an auction and never stuck a dime into it. Stay anywhere but here.

Thankfully it was only one night!

Overall this is a good hotel.  It isn't very fancy, but very functional.  We didn't have breakfast because we didn't wake up in time.  The WiFi is weak in most areas of the room. This hotel could stand to have a remodel, not a bad hotel just a bit dated.  I would probably stay here again.  The staff was great.   

I had hot water!!

We were in Room 134, King bed and we slept well.  Check in was as speedy as could be in spite of the internet being down. Room was clean. No plug ins by bed so charged phone on bathroon vanity which is outside the bathroom. Coffee maker but no coffee supplies. Breakfast was usual fare,  oatmeal,  cereal,  yogurt,  hard boiled eggs,  waffles,  juice, milk and coffee.  Ashley the manager was very nice and helpful.  Probably would stay again if the internet was working.

Slept well

The reason that I have stayed in this hotel previously was due to the good management of this hotel. This is an older hotel, but the previous management was diligent in maintaining the property. I stayed here for 3 nights on this trip and I sincerely hope that the new management does as good of a job as the previous owners. I have some minor concerns but my stay here was safe and comfortable.

New management

The room was clean and the price was fair. The big problem was the check-in. Two children greeted me as I walked into the lobby they had to go get their mother who looked very exhausted having worked over 90 hours straight. I waited over 10 minutes. Why wasn’t the owner able to back up the manager and provide her with the staff she needed so that she could have sleep and do a better job?  The next morning at breakfast was awful. The restroom was not taken care of. The coffee was cold there was one hard boiled egg and not much else except for the batter that they use for waffles. No fruit no eggs really sad. I don’t think I’ll ever stay there again.
