We booked a room here for a trip to Acadia that we planned for august 2020 on the strength of the positive reviews and had to cancel due to the pandemic because we were planning to fly there.  I contacted the B&B both by phone and email numerous times to cancel within the timeframe to cancel without penalty and never got any response at all.  I ultimately had to dispute the charge for the deposit on my credit card because they never did respond.  Even if they were closed for the pandemic, there should have been some communication.

Unresponsive

We found the Birches B&B as a result of positive reviews on trip advisor, and the place exceeded our lofty expectations. It is located on the quiet side of the Island and is truly isolated from all the tourist traffic. This is what makes it so charming. 
When we arrived, we were greeted by Susie, who informed us that she had a cancelation and if we wanted we could switch rooms to one that had a better view, which we did. Our room was on the second floor, and as we were on the road for 12 days, we were loaded down with our allotted 50 lb. suitcases. Susie carried my wife’s bag up the stairs like it was nothing, while I brought the other bag up. Our room was lovely, with a view of the sound out the back window. 
Susie was the perfect hostess, getting to know us, and asking what we wanted to see while we were in Acadia. She Actually mapped out an itinerary for us, which we quickly found had too much to see in the day plus that we had on the Island. One of the most fascinating stops on her route was the Seal Cove Auto Museum which features turn of the century Automobiles, motorcycles and bikes from the Richard C. Paine collection. This is a must stop location for anyone with an interest in vintage Automobiles. 
Our stay was all too short, and next time – and there will be a next time - we will stay longer to better explore the wonders of Acadia. 


A gem on of a location - B&B done right!

Lengthy review but words arent enough,

I cannot begin to explain how immensely positive our experience was at this location.  This was a surprise for my wife for our anniversary, as we've never been to Acadia. Also we've never stayed in a bed and breakfast. Communication from the time I called to book through my departure was hugely joyful, polite, and clear. On our arrival Susi had put out 6 roses displayed beautifully with other flowers in a vase for my wife (already having known this was our 6th anniversary). The room was the king turret and had spectacular ocean views. We were welcomed warmly and made to feel at home immediately. Susi makes an exquisite breakfast, truly one of the best I've had (fresh fruit with whipped cream and homemade pear syrup to start followed by an omelette made to perfection with fresh spinach onions and tomatoes). Susi sat to eat with us and asked what our interests were, connecting with us like an old friend.  After learning about us she continued to map out an entire itinerary of all of Acadia, explaining over a dozen stops on the way. She single handedly made our stay at Acadia and ultimately our anniversary something we will NEVER forget. We plan to return as much as we can. I would recommend anyone and everyone to come meet Susi and learn of her family estate and it's history and enjoy a truly unique, warm, and rewarding trip in an already amazing location.

It's the best Bed and Breakfast experience I've had; how it's meant to be.

A great location, great property, beautiful room, and exquisite staff: I couldn't ask for more except I wish I stayed longer.

If you're looking for a New England Bed and Breakfast, this is the one. Susi and her staff were so helpful with the itinerary for our stay and it wouldn't have been the same without them.

A memorable stay at a beautiful property

Great B&B with a wonderful view. Loads of travel info we needed and a hug at the end. Within a short distance of everything available in Acadia, including Bar Harbor, the National Park, and the quiet side of the island. Susi helped us with getting tickets for Oli's Trolley and Eli's Nature Tour on the boat - both were nice surprises. We then came back to this wonderful, restful place we had been looking for. Options included playing a game of Croquet or having a glass of wine on the deck under the stars. My wife and I found this to be the best stop of our two-week trip. Surrounded by trees and the water is a rock throw away. Susi helped us to learn more about what makes this part of the world so special. The breakfast was great too!  So if you’re looking for a great experience and quiet place away from the crowds, do yourself a favor and call Susi at The Birches.  This is the type of place you might want to call your home and, in the end, know why you came there. Thanks Susi, Gene and Diana

Great Two Day Get-A-Way

I can't say enough good things about The Birches!  My husband and I and some friends of ours had an absolute wonderful time on our trip, mostly because of our amazing host, Susi.  She told us the best places to go, things to do, where to eat.  We got to experience the entire island as though we were local and not tourists.  Susi made the most delicious breakfasts to start our day.  She would map out our plans and send us on our way.  We thoroughly enjoyed every single one of her recommendations.  Her passion for the area and its history is evident, and her joy in sharing it with her guests made the trip so much more enjoyable.  The rooms were spacious and clean and had their own unique touch.  We had a fantastic view of the harbor and enjoyed seeing deer every morning.  The hike up Flying Mountain, within walking distance of The Birches, had breathtaking views.  The donuts at Colonel's in Northeast Harbor are to die for, as well as the popovers at The Asticou Inn.  Our absolute favorite day was the Puffin boat tour and the sights on Schoodic Island.  The granite museum and the fantastic Steven Haynes were also a delight.  Again, all recommended by Susi!  You won't be disappointed to stay at The Birches Bed & Breakfast!  We can't wait to return!

The Best Bed and Breakfast in Maine

My husband and I recently returned from an incredible weekend exploring Acadia National Park, and the island. We decided to do this very spontaneously, and actually booked the b&b the night before. 

I called Susi the next morning to let her know we were driving in (from Lancaster, PA - yes, we are overzealous in most things). She was warm and accommodating from the first words we exchanged. She gave us tips on what highways and bridges to avoid, and where to stop in Portland for dinner. She encouraged us to take our time coming in and was ready for us when we arrived at nearly 11pm. 

The property is gorgeous. The setting, landscaping, vibe, and view are all worth much more than what they charge for a night’s stay! Our room was spacious, had everything we needed, and a beautiful view of the water. 

All of this would be more than enough to leave a glowing review....but there is more! 

Susi took the time to map out a perfect full day adventure for us at the park and island. We never would have saw half of what we did without her itinerary. Honestly, she gives the best advise, tips, and directions! She speaks about the area like a true passionate local, and can help you understand how to spend whatever time you have there better than you would have on your own. Her partner is every bit as friendly, warm, and helpful. We could have stayed and chatted with them, sitting in front of their window, looking at the gorgeous view, for hours. 

...And she makes the best breakfast sandwiches! 

The location is perfect. You are exactly where you need to be to get everywhere you want to go quickly. The view from the property is magical. The hospitality is phenomenal. 

What an incredible find! 

Can I give this experience 100 stars? 

Had stay set up for week in Sept at cottage & put down a 40% deposit.  Had agreement in the emails with Susi (owner) that if we had any issues & cancelled before Aug 9 that the 40% would be returned.  The contract came to us which we returned but Susi didn't show the change of the full 40% back agreed to in the emails; our friend dealing with her took her at her word from the email that she would be good with her word, plus what were the odds we weren't going to go.  Well one of our parties had a health issue and we emailed to advise on July 21 we had to cancel, eventually got her a doc's note.  Susi refused to provide refund, refused to reply to our emails, refused to look at things as was promised from a on site meeting with one of the couples about this & refused to call back on all the phone messages we left her.  
NOT A TRUSTWORTHY PERSON, STAY AWAY

Didn't keep her word

The room was great, large and nicely appointed with a view of the bay and private bathroom.  Our hosts went to great lengths to ensure that we were well taken care of.  The property sits on a hill with views of the bay, a patio area which was great for morning coffee and evening wine!  Acadia National Park was our initial destination.  It was beautiful but much more congested than we anticipated...coming back to the B&B at the end of the day was perfect.

Wonderful stay on the "Quietside"

Location: a New England-style cottage with very few spacious rooms furnished in the American style of Maine overlooking the small bay. In our house there was also a very well-stocked bookstore and free Netflix. To make you feel part of a family, we are thought of by the very nice owners who are always ready to chat and give advice on routes around. Finally, the strictly American but really superlative breakfast cooked before your eyes.
