Phenomenal stay in the heart of downtown Staunton!  We stayed in Womack 15 from 10-12 November 2023 and it was perfect - spotlessly clean, comfy, and gorgeous antique furnishings.  Extremely well maintained exterior and interior, as well as common areas.  Biggest and best surprise was the delightful breakfast included in the stay - this wasn't a bland continental buffet, but instead some deliciously ripe fresh fruit and a breakfast casserole called Strata, which was mouthwateringly scrumptious.  Coffee was hot, black, tasty, and plentiful.  It is evident the owner takes pride in his hotel, and he was extremely accommodating and knowledgeable about where to dine in town and the sights to see.  Frederick House is the PERFECT place to explore historic Staunton - we are so glad we chose to stay there instead of a chain hotel along the interstate.  We were in town to see a play at the Blackfriars Playhouse, which was an easy walk from the hotel.   This place is absolutely worth the money and then some!

Perfect place to stay in the heart of historic Staunton!

We stayed in room 16 in the Womack house. We had to drag up our luggage up an external set of stairs. The room was bizarre. A hallway and a staircase to locked rooms upstairs and then a big dark room with two creepy twin beds that looked like they came out of a horror movie and a queen bed in the other corner of the L shaped room. Furniture was unmatched and  looked like it was picked up from the curb. A hole in the wall where once a picture hung. Tiny bathroom and shower off the hallway.
At first with the layout, we were confused. Once we realized all of this was the room, we made sure to close both doors to the hallway at night as we felt exposed. 
The towels were like ShamWow towels. It felt like rubbing plastic all over you when drying off. Terrible feeling. 
I hardly slept at all as I felt creeped out and unsettled. We were told at check in  that nobody would be manning the front desk between 9pm and 6 am. When we got back from Hamlet in the nearby Blackfriar in the evening, the Internet was out - no streaming. I called the desk in the morning because I needed to do some work on my laptop and was told the router was in room 17, which was occupied. So we had no wifi and terrible cellular reception for the whole stay.
On a bright note, the breakfast was very good and plentiful.

The Frederick House Hotel was delightful on every level!  The room/suite was so spacious and reasonably priced.  The bed was comfortable, and I wished I was staying longer because it felt like a perfect place to come back to after a day of exploring and sightseeing.  I'll definitely be back!

Wonderful welcoming place to stay

Frederick House is the kind of place where you just wish you could stay an extra day.
Partly it’s because of the location, an easy walk downhill to Main Street and just a few blocks away from the Woodrow Wilson Museum and a wide variety of great eating choices. It’s close enough to have gelato more than once at the Split Banana, like we did, and to walk home from dinner or the theater.
Partly because it’s a beautiful collection of well-preserved Victorian homes that have been turned into comfortable and cozy rooms. High ceilings, fireplaces, carefully curated antiques and generously sized bathrooms create a luxuriousness that’s easy to get used to.
Partly because of the friendly hosts, who went out of their way to make our stay as easy and comfortable as possible from the moment they met us. We enjoyed talking to Brooke and Ross so much that we already think of them as friends. They helped us figure out the best places to eat and how to adjust our itinerary so that we could experience the town more like locals, which is our favorite way to travel.
And we are still talking about the spectacular breakfasts we had, unparalleled at any of the hotels we’ve ever stayed at. I’m passionate about my food and am not lying when I say that their homemade waffle was the best I’ve ever had – so good I wasn’t willing to try anything else during our four-day stay. My husband felt the same about the apple raisin quiche. We really appreciated how Ross remembered every detail of what we liked, even though he always asked on the off chance we’d change our food minds.
We are already planning and looking forward to our return! Thank you, Ross and Brooke, for giving us a new favorite place to visit!


Fabulous hosts, comfortable stay, incredible breakfast!

We loved it here. Ross was so welcoming and gave us some amazing tips on where to go for food and drinks. The bed was amazing and we slept great. I am lactose intolerant and Ross made me a great breakfast. would definitely come back. 

Best B&B in Staunton 

We stayed at the Frederick House for 1 night while visiting Staunton.  It's in a great location downtown, within walking distance of shops, restaurants and attractions.  The hotel is actually a series of old home within a block or two of the office.  We checked in at 3 and moved our car to the Patrick House, which had its own lot.  The staff were very friendly and helpful and gave us several recommendations for our visit.

We had a king suite, which had a large living room and large bedroom.  The room was very nice.  High ceilings and detailed woodwork.  It was nicely decorated in colonial/traditional styles.  The bed was very comfortable and the room was very well maintained.  It had been awhile since we'd seen tube TVs but I guess that's what fits in the armoires.

Breakfast is included and is served in the main office area.  It's not as lavish as some B&Bs we've used, but our food was fresh and well prepared.  Again the staff were great.

I'm sure the prices go up as spring and summer approach, but our rate was very reasonable for the room we had.

We highly recommend The Frederick House.

Great stay!

Really liked the room to a point. That’s when I was awakened during a kid-afternoon nap so an electrical inspector could check wiring for the building (the box was located in a closet in our room). Then, of all rooms, the only other guests on our second night chose the room above us. We could hear every move they made… walking about, toilet flushing,..   

The baseboard radiators were warm but banged a bit in the night. But the great cafe breakfasts and no charge for a dog made the room a great value despite all of the above..

Old building issues but free for dogs and great breakfasts!

This group of buildings that comprises the hotel has lots of character and charm.  But be prepared for the quirks of old buildings.  If you are on a lower floor, you may hear the creaking of people walking in the upstairs room.  HVAC systems may be a bit unique- our room had a thermostat on the wall to control heat, but a split on the wall for the A/C.  Although the room came with a fridge, it did not work.  As people have mentioned before, there are a lot of stairs - not a good place for people with issues with walking.  We were on the third floor and it was an ordeal to lug the suitcases up an exterior staircase in the rain at night.

But that said, it is a lovely place to stay and the breakfast is very nice.  The server could not have been more welcoming.  The hotel is centrally located to many shops and restaurants.

The hotel office entrance is in the large parking lot.  It took us a while to find it at night.  If you have trouble finding it, keep looking - the parking lot is quite large.

Lots of Character

This place is unique;  it's not so much as one hotel as a collection of older homes which have been repurposed into an inn.  We stayed at the Warnock house, which was built by a physician back in the day.  The room was comfortable and clean, and the breakfast was marvelous.  Added bonus - the Frederick House is easily within walking distance of the Blackfriars Playhouse, and all the great restaurants on Beverly Street.

Very interesting place

Everything about this visit was A+ from making the reservation to arrival, accommodations, breakfast, etc.  We stayed in Womack House and were so glad we did!  It would be a little challenging for those who aren't able to walk up and down steps as the check office is on a lower level than most rooms.  You need to walk on outdoor stairs to get to your room.  We were fortunate because a parking space was available on the public road right across the street from our room.
