We were visiting a local market, buying ingredients for dinner and prepared it at the GA Hostel. It was at the cosy small kitchen right at the reception area, where we also had dinner. The owner was really nice and she encouraged us to ask whatever question we had about viewe talked a lot about food and vietnam

Great Cooking Class

I booked a tour to Nin Bimh and everything was very smooth and convenient! Chili who made the tour for me was very accommodating. She's very attentive in updating every details for you. There was a little change in the tour for me (one destination was closed due to the COVID thing going)  and Chili updated me immediately about this. I felt I was treated with an utmost importance. I am really happy with my choice booking a tour with them. I will definitely choose this tour again when I'm back in Hanoi.

My friend Kathleen Evans had booked tours through Chili of GA Hostel and Tours, so I was glad I had her contact info. She had helped me to book a tour to Cat Ba Island/Lan Ha Bay and because of the unpredictability of the COVID-19 situation and constant updates, the authorities had closed off Cat Ba Island before I could make the trip..and Chili was quick to respond to this and asked if I wanted to rebook to go to Ha Long Bay instead with Sunlight Cruise and I was glad she was on the ball...in fact I was lucky to be one of the groups who got to do the cruise before they closed off Ha Long Bay too for an indefinite amount of time.

She had also booked for me the Ninh Binh tour which included Mua Cave ("the Great Wall of China of Vietnam") and Tam Coc and due to the COVID-19 updates, Tam Coc was closed so she told us we could go to Trang An instead - she was really super helpful in giving me and my friends any updates or changes during this unpredictable climate.  She was also super helpful in checking for me about another friend who wanted to go to Ninh Binh the following day  (she goes above and beyond and found out it was not a good idea for the following day due to many parts of Ninh Binh closing for spraying) - I cannot recommend her enough. We were really pleased with the quality of the tours as well.  Definitely got our money's worth besides being super lucky to have been able to experience them.

Hello! My name is Maci, and I’m from the United States. I have been living in Vietnam for more than 1 year.

I love Vietnamese cuisine, especially from the north. I most often eat on the street because I am not sure how to recreate my favorite dishes at home. I’m so excited that I can now make Phở Gà, which will not only save me money, but also grant me the opportunity to invite friends over for a family-style meal! 

I feel that this class has enriched my mind, body, and soul! I believe that it will continue to do so, as Phở is healthy for the body, requires skill to cook and is calming for the mind, and sharing it with those you love is good for your soul!

The ingredients we used were vibrant and fresh, and each step of the process brought out their natural flavors in the best possible way. So delicious!

After being welcomed and chatting with the lovely ladies who work at Gà Hostel, we began the preparation process. This is included boiling and seasoning chicken, roasting spices, dicing and cooking vegetables, preparing toppings, and learning about the proper timeline and temperatures to bring out the best flavor. 

We all worked together and helped one another along the way. It felt wonderful to pay tribute to authentic Vietnamese culture, while also bonding and having a great time with everyone involved. Phở gà really brought us all together, even though we had not met previously!

Alice, the woman leading the cooking class, got us even more excited about the dish by explaining it’s history. It felt amazing to take part in something which was born and raised from such a rich culture!

We learned about where Phở came from and why it contains certain ingredients. I am impressed with Vietnam’s ability to make the most of what they have. With what the French initially discarded, they created one of the most healthy and delicious dishes! 

We also learned about the different ways it was served over time, and how it spread to different areas and evolved. One thing that has always stayed the same, though, is Vietnam’s emphasis on food and family, and Phở’s ability to connect the two.

This event sparked my desire to learn to cook even more Vietnamese dishes! Because of this, the staff’s welcoming and friendly disposition, and their true talent for both cooking and teaching, I will absolutely be attending more ‘Cook Like a Hanoian’ events in the future!

I came to Hanoi as my first stop on a one month solo trip to Vietnam. I stayed at an AirBNB that recommended Ga Hostel to help me book some tours. 

I was a bit skeptical but I shouldn’t have been! Chili and her team went above and beyond in every possible way. They didn’t push anything on me but worked super hard to help me decide what I might like based on my timing and needs. They recommended food and attractions in Hanoi. And when they found out it was my birthday they even invited me to one of their cooking classes for free to celebrate.

I booked two tours with them (Lan Ha Bay and Ninh Bình) and Chili checked in with me regularly well after I left to make sure I was happy with everything. When something didn’t work (my stay one night, or a missed travel connection), Chili was always available to help smooth it over.

I can’t recommend them highly enough. They did so much to make my landing in Vietnam as soft and pleasant as possible.

They organized for me the two-day and one-night tour in Cat Ba and it was truly an unforgettable experience, but they also help you book a flight or transportation so if you are in Northern Vietnam contact them because they are super professional and with a super good level of English.They also organize daily city tours and excellent cooking courses.

Chili’s details were given to me by my Airbnb host in Hanoi, as I needed help planning tour trips to Halong Bay and Cat Ba island. Chili was wonderfully helpful in organising tours in Halong Bay, car transfers and general advice. Even when we changed our minds at the last minute about returning early to Hanoi, Chili was incredibly flexible in helping us rearrange all our plans. Anytime my partner and I needed help with little things like should we carry cards or cash in Vietnam or where to we buy SIM cards etc, we turned to Chili to seek her advice. She made our trip in Halong Bay and Hanoi incredibly enjoyable. She was even kind enough to invite us to a NYE dinner at her hostel with her guests and friends. Over a delicious dinner, Chili spoke about life in Vietnam and offered further advice about our trip. I can’t recommend seeking Chili’s guidance enough, because she is as kind as she is helpful. 

Tours and travel advice from Chili

My family and I didn't stay at GA Hostel, but Chili arranged everything for us, from our tour to Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh and Perfume Pagoda upto our airport drop off. On the last minute, we have to change plans because my husband and daughter got sick the night before our tour to Perfume Pagoda. After informing Chili, she was able to cancel our trip and book us a Hop on Hop off Bon Bon Bus for our City Tour which was very good. 
GA Hostel staff hosted a delicious lunch for my family and our guides after our walking tour which was very nice. We never experienced this kind of hospitality to other places we've visited and this is truly an experience for us.
