I was supposed to stay at another hotel that shall remain nameless, but their beds were roughly as comfortable as sleeping on concrete. The lady working the front desk suggested Square Hotel, which supposedly was popular with Western tourists. Not having a lot of options late at night, I decided to go to Square. The hotel looked empty and there seems to be absolutely nothing close by in the form of restaurants or shops.

If you're looking for a luxury hotel, you'll be sorely disappointed. But if you're looking to just sleep for the night, then it's a very great option, especially for 400 000 dong. The bed was somewhat comfortable, although on the hard side for me. Just don’t make the mistake I did of lifting the bedsheets to have a look at the mattress, because it wasn’t very clean. 

The hotel supplies you with basic amenities lite toothbrush, shower gel and such. The bathroom was a small toilet/shower combo, so when you take a shower everything gets wet as there is no shower booth or curtain. I checked out early the morning after, so I have no idea how the breakfast was. The staff was very nice and gave great service.

If you stay several days in Ninh Binh you might want to spend a little more money for some extra comfort. But if you’re just looking to sleep for the night, then Square Hotel is a good choice. Just make sure to get a clean bed.

Good for one night

This hostel is too bad such as hard matress, dirty room & suburban location. The staff couldn't speak English (just a little), even though asking the local map and train station, they couldn't understand what I needed. Do not recommend !

Poor service & worst hostel

In the pouring rain, we found this haven. Seriously, after a a stressful time in Hanoi, the charm of the Square Hotel was a much needed relief. From the beginning, the staff tried so hard to take care of us and were the friendliest we have met.the rooms are clean large with balconies. Rooms have wifi and flat screen. Yes the hotel is a little far from town, but peaceful and a taxi can take you anywhere you need. The manager is really wonderful,and  is working to make it like a 4 star hotel. The food is fresh, and we were so happy to meet hong and her family to have a real tradional experience in Vietnam. The food at the restaraunt is fresh too .This 
hotel is a gem, a must stay in ninh binh if you are visiting or just passing through.

We love square hotel!

We stayed at the Square Hotel in Ninh Binh on a friends recommendation. We found it to be  very comfortable & clean, it also has the softest beds in Vietnam . The staff were excellent, most spoke English or French & were very helpful with local tourist information. Admittedly they are not in the centre of town, however if it is peace & quiet you are looking for after the hustle & bustle of Hanoi then this is the place. They also do free pick-ups from the train/bus stations..
